|
|
I am currently looking for a job to come back to Korea and looking for some good solid information about some cities in Gangwon Province.
Gangneung city
Sokcho city
Donghae city
Yangyang county
Goseong county
Last time I was in Korea I was in Mokpo and I rally like that size of city plus is was close to Gwangju which made getting to Western style places an easy weekend away. I hae searched the internet for information on these places and have found little to nothing about the actual cities.
Has anyone lived here or is currently lived here who can give me a little information??
Please help looking to sign a contract to be in Korea for March.
Thanks |

I went to Sokcho during Chuseok. It's very beautiful though I must say....small. The people seem very friendly though. It's by this beautiful mountain. |

Are these EPIK Jobs?
OK, here is a basic breakdown:
Gangneung city: Its a medium sized Korean city. No movie theatre. Lots of restaurants. A big fish market. A University (not highly ranked). Next to the mountains. beaches not too far. 1/2 hour to the best Korean skiing.
Sokcho city: Smaller than Gangneung. Does have a movie theatre, though. A nice beach in the city. Near Seoraksan park for good hiking and stuff like that.
Donghae city: Smaller than Sokcho... not much there, from what I've seen. A beach nearby...
Yangyang county: Many countryside schools. Not too far from Sokcho and Seoraksan NP. Beaches. An airport with only 1 flight coming and going each day (to Busan).
Goseong county: Really far North; borders North Korea. This would be the most remote place to work/live. |

Also, the people in these areas DO seem nicer, to me at least, than Koreans in any other place I've been... may have to do with the high military presence here... But also, they can seem kind of backwards and simpleminded sometimes. |

Naw, dont be concerned. They're government jobs working for public schools... they are legitimate jobs... You will have "issues" with them for sure, but they are real jobs. |

I have had a good experience with EPIK however not everyone has.
Do some searches on eslcafe.
There is a gangwon list on yahoo you can read through.

Those are all beautiful places for sure. Small and remote, but beautiful. However, you said:

This will be a problem. Seoul is 2-3+ hours away. If you drive or take a bus you should miss most of the worst traffic since you'd be traveling the other way during major holidays, but you'll still run into some of it, probably when you most want to get there aka KMurphey's law. Take the train.
Also, there'd be little to no western products available anywhere. |

I know people who have lived in Gangneung, and they really enjoyed it. The only complaint was its distance from Seoul, but mainly because the roads from Gangwando aren't as good as the roads coming into Seoul from the south.
From my experience though, Gangwando people are some of the nicest in Korea. |

This year, for me, the only time the traffic going to Seoul (Friday night/Saturday morning) and back (Sunday) was during the summer vacation season. Then, it was backed up about 100km away from the city and the trip took 8 hours. Other times, the only place it was bad was in the city itself.
You can take the train if you live in Donghae or Gangneung. Otherwise, there is no train further to the North.
You can find some western goods... There's Emart, and whatnot.. Pizza Hut, Mr. Pizza, etc etc... but you wont anywhere near the same variety of western stuff as you would in Seoul. |

Some of the roads that were destroyed by floods last year are still being
repaired, but most are very good. Of course they go around lots of mountains so they aren't straight and there are few places to safely pass. |

Gangneung is a beautiful place. I would work there just for the beaches and the beauty of the place. Also the down town aint that bad either. |
