This is a fairly technical query. When I boot up, I should be automatically connected to the net, but I get the 'limited connectivity' logo (with the big yellow exclamation mark). I then have to go to Network Connections and disable then enable the connection. How can I sort this out?

Do you have a direct connection, or are you using a router?

If you have a router (regular or wireless) then try connecting directly to your cable modem with a cable, and make sure your wireless networking is
disabled.

If that works then you can add the router with a cable and then next try the wireless.

I don't have a router or a modem - just a cable going from the wall to my PC. It was working fine a few days ago, but I have installed various apps since then, so maybe there is a conflict somewhere. On to Google, I suppose...

Two things:

I had that same problem, and it was something wrong with XP. I put up with it for weeks, until one day I installed a new hard drive and reinstalled Windows. No problems after that. Something was corrupted or damaged.

You might want to call your internet company for a service check to see what's up, though. It can be a routing issue, if they have a router installed elsewhere in the building.

If it started after a recent XP update, you might want to uninstall the updates since it began, and let them reinstall. Sometimes XP updates can go wrong during the download. You can find them under Add/Remove programs, if you check to see windows updates.

I think more than likely its an issue with the ISP. Just come and get them to look at it.

Turn off your computer and unplug your modem. Wait for about 5 minutes so the IP can be renewed. Plug in the AC plug to your modem and wait until all the lights are flashing then turn on your computer. Also, make sure your CAT5 cable is not bad. Try a different one.
