just thought id point this out again....
the school in mokdong who advertise on their website that foreign teachers here have aids/ are mostly gay/ are not qualified/dont care about students/ and often have criminal records......has been allowed to continue advertising such, and has not been stopped.
School site: http://www.cyjenglish.com/
Native speaker warning: http://www.cyjenglish.com/rule.jsp
I would encourage another round of phone calls to the office number listed ...to try and convince them they may not be right.
their office numbers are listed as 02-2604-6034/2325
its pure racist rubbish.
all foreigners have aids/criminal records/ and are gay.
rediculous. |

Does Korea even have laws that would make that a crime? Further, would it be enforced? Ironically, if we were saying the same thing about them, we'd be brought up on liable charges. Think our case would even make it to court if WE tried? |

I wish that site posted degree information about their teachers, in order for us to judge how qualified they actually are. It's one thing for a foreign teacher to come in with a degree from Drew, or Maryland, or Oklahoma City, or SUNY, or wherever, because we're able to do our jobs by virtue of our native speaking abilities. A Korean would have to have an MA in TOEFL from a foreign university in order to meet my definition of qualified. BAs from domestic universities in random subjects just won't cut it.
Perhaps they should invest in at least one native speaker, in order to show them how to spell "Shuttle": http://www.cyjenglish.com/bus.jsp
Has anyone written anything on this for the local papers? I know the Metropolitician had a nice write-up on his blog. If not, I may have to put something together for an op-ed piece, even though the Metropolitician has a wider, more educated, more influential audience. |

Haha, and there's some pretty good names for their levels, too. At my school we had Mountain, Pinnacle, Rainbow, and a few others I can't remember. Here we have Galloping, High Galloping, and Intervanced, to name a few. |

eh whatever.
luckily most hagwon mommas realize koreans can't speak english well and send em to hagwons with us foreign monkeys.
just a last ditch effort by a pitiful hagwon to get some racist customers.
hell maybe i'll open a korean language institute back home and only hire whiteys who spent a year or two teaching english in korea. that would be cheaper than hiring qualified korean teachers i'm sure! then i'll post a website saying our teachers are the best because they've never eaten dog.
could be a workable business plan! -- except, who the hell wants to study korean?! |

I remember when Metropolitician wrote up on it and I thought it would have been taken down by now, that was six months ago. Surely, this is racial vilification and subject to prosecution under the new racial discrimination act Korean has implemented.
It just proves how miserly and racist the owners of that hagwon are. I seem to remember that Metropoltician pointed out that many of their instructors had studied and/or obtained degrees from the West (home of the aids-riddled foreign devils). The owners obviously don't want to fork out the extra cash for a native English teacher and would rather underpay Korean or Gyopo instructors, and push their racial agenda to justify their miserly ways. |

Funny, I've tried to contact the seoul government or tourist board about this through their websites, but strangely enough there is no email address for either, especially considering this country is as wired as it is. If I am wrong and there is an address, please show it to me. Actually, one more thing, why dont we as a population here complain. Surely a website set up to show the world what is said about us here would force koreans into re-thinking how they treat us here. IF you dont agree, please dont tell me to leave the country, I am trying to help you not destroy you. |

Because we're a temporary transient population that has no vested interest in going to great effort. If U don't like it, then most people simply leave. they have homes and other options to go to.
If we were a resident minority, here permanently, raising families here and dependant on Korea long term, then yes, there would ultimately grow some sort of movement to improve attitudes. A sort of struggle that every disadvantaged ethnic minority in the US has had to fight for. But thats not the case. We're very temporary economic migrants.
Besides.. white folks just aren't used to having to fight for their rights, or being a disadvantaged minority. |

Sounds like the school doesn't want to hire more expensive foreigners. Parents assume if a Korean is teaching their kid they'll spend all their time speaking Korean and not practicing english. That's what two Koreans do when they meet, right? Any chance a Korean can get to operate in his beloved language, he'll do that. Why should a Korean teacher be any different? Hell, that's what white devils with rudimentary Korean do, communicate in Korean with their Korean english coteacher as their english sucks so badly.
So to counter parent fears and justify their cheap ass hiring policy, they play the foreigner fear card. |
