I'm in the market for a new laptop/notebook and I'm looking at Vista models and thinking about all that software that will need to be re-written.
Anybody know what's going on with vista now? All the original reviews are really crappy. Memory hog, full of bugs. I'm thinking of playing the safe card and going with xp. I'm outside Seoul. Buying used raises new issues I can't become an expert on quickly enough. Any shopping advice? Best stores/computer shopping experiences particularly welcome.

Also particularly welcome would be any perspectives from musicians using Finale. I'm thinking of buying the update.

Thanks

I would stay clear from Vista. I heard of a BETA SP1 update for it that should deal with the memory issues but the update is a BETA... SO stick with XP. As far as a good place to buy I am lucky that I have the military camps at my finger tips however I tend to lean towards ordering online through US etailers like Newegg or other similar sites..

I am obtaining the latest Finale right now and I am way excited to try it out..

Very Happy

Vista came pre-installed on my laptop. I hate the OS. Stick with XP.

Hey that's exciting. Are you using the Garritan Orchestra sounds kit? Does it need to be on a separate hard drive like the digital audio station recommendations I followed back in 2001 with my Win98SE? Or does it all run on the one hard drive without problems? Do I need to tweak a store-bought computer running XP at all to use the Garritan? Dish, please!

And by the way thanks for the other info

I would also suggest that you do NOT use vista yet. Many of the North American and Japanese computer retail companies are offering rollbacks to winXP for a reason.

You get get most brands of laptop at one or another of the places in Yongsan. They tend to be most expensive at the I'Park mall (above Yongsan station) and are cheaper over at the terminal building or Son-in plaza (sometimes by more than 100k won).

English windows is sometimes available as an option. Alternatively you can get an OEM copy of XP or special order your laptop instead of off the shelf and it will come with English XP.

The dealers at son-in plaza are usually best for one-off requests. The ones in I'Park usually can't be bothered.

I'm using Vista and haven't had any problems.

However, I'd strongly recommend NOT buying a computer in Korea. There is a good sticky thread in the tech forum that covers this stuff in more depth.

If I wasn't planning to stay in Korea for years then I would just go to Yongsan and pick up one of those 400,000 desktop deals. Then sell it here on Dave's when I left Korea.
