Racist incident roils Pa. high school By MARTHA RAFFAELE, Associated Press Writer
Thu Oct 11, 8:41 AM ET

LITITZ, Pa. - For years, a clique of high school students in this prosperous and overwhelmingly white borough have worn clothes adorned with Confederate flags and parked their pickups in a section of the school parking lot known as "redneck row."

The display, some parents of minority students say, was just one symptom of festering racism that school officials ignored until animosities boiled over last week.

That's when three white 16-year-old students allegedly yelled racial slurs and threw paper wads at minority students outside the 1,600-student Warwick High School.

School officials vowed to discipline the three students, tighten security and ban Confederate flags on school property. On Wednesday, police charged the three with disorderly conduct.

The "disturbing and repulsive" Oct. 3 confrontation was a "wake-up call" for Warwick High School, said Superintendent John George. "Perhaps we were lulled into a false sense that our school district was immune to racism and bigotry," he said.

I have been wondering the same thing.

I mean...I left in 2004 and I don't think it was near this bad back then...

But I could be wrong Question

In 2004, every little incidence if idiocy wasn't newsworthy. Now, because it's trendy, they'll report everything that, in the past, would have been local news if anything at all.

Good on them for disciplining these kids.

But when I read 'until it was too late', I was expecting there to be some sort of serious aftermath. Mayber a stabbing or shooting. Paper wads? Whatever.

Being a victim of taunting and spitballs? Wow, another thing that has changed is what it means to actually be a victim of something.

While repulsive and repugnant, I don't feel that anything these students did was worthy of being called racist. Having bad taste is not something to be brought before the law. Watched, yes....brought up on charges, no way.

That, or perhaps there's more racism in America than you would like to believe.

Oh, I read the article. It still doesn't explain how being on the wrong end of someone calling you names makes you a "victim." I guess I was a "victim" when that black guy called me a cracker 10 years ago or so.

Nope. that's not it at all. Maybe there's not enough racism for you to point and say "America is racist!" Rolling Eyes

I have been called a 'fucking whitey' by many indians in Canada, and I have been chased by a group of them who wanted to mug me. You don't hear me talking about being a victim.

Honestly, if that's the worst thing that happens to you, you have a charmed life.
