John Denver "Take Me Home Country Roads"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DC8nDdPM_Qk

I use the one above, I give them a lyrics sheet with some missing words.
They have to listen and find the missing words.

Then I have them correct themselves using the video below.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsAVwgHchoE

If there is extra time I use these.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qkpfss640tg

These all go over well in Middle School.

Of course, the OP asked for current songs. I don't even KNOW any current songs, lol, getting old

I don't know any current songs either! I just do a search for "Top 40" or "Billboard Hot 100." Then if I see one that looks ok I'll look for the YouTube and go from there. Sometimes a song will look really good then I come to find out that there's an expletive in there somewhere...

[...] in a box

step one, you cut a hole in a box.
step two, you stick your junk in the box.
step three, you make her open the box.

i think it won a grammy or something, so you can't argue with that!

I use videos to motivate the students but with caution. It is overly pictorial and the movement just grasps the eye and takes away from the language focus/input. So instead I prefer to use karaoke with just one background image or just a few. The focus is more on the language that prompts, arrives on the screen.

That said, video is still a great motivating activity / focus in the classroom and great to use for a warm up / review. I have a whole folder of videos, all subtitled and many of which I made (with movie maker) at our efl classroom community. Available to members on vimeo.com Also free at the Batcave are many Korean subtitled videos.

Esnips have been causing me problems, so if if the link doesn't work or you can't get my files, PM me and I'll send it to you myself!

Jizzo,

Thanks for the Real English link and I recommend their videos for the repetitiveness. I have a whole pile on my www.batcave.net video site for quick download.

I also put up my vimeo karaoke video application on Efl classrooom http://eflclassroom.ning

I'll leave it up for a few days -- simple scroll and find the songs/videos which might be of use in the classroom. Over the next few weeks I'll be uploading there a few hundred more I've on my hard drive. They will be in easy to select albums. To download, join the community and you get easy download of any karaoke video.

I just put up a page on our teaching community which has karaoke flash. Just press the song and listen/follow the lyrics.

http://eflclassroom.ning.com/page/page/show?id=826870%3APage%3A10770

This is meant for both teachers and students and without any horrible/bad translation of lyrics. Thanks to icnelly for noting these songs.

A good, quick way for students to practice English and for teachers to play music when they have class downtime (or writing), a party or just in need of the music to a song.

DD

PS. I only have up to the letter "I" but will finish shortly. I'll also install a quick search index.

Perfect Day by Lou Reed. slow but good fun.

I still want to teach Nazi Punks F*ck Off (the Napalm Death version) but I don't think it's suitable for my first years.

what sort of activities do you all usually do when you teach popsongs?
i know fill in the blank, go over some phrases and grammar but just that for 45 minutes?
i can throw in a kara file but most are shy about singing.

High School Muscial - I think its very good for middle school thru high school teaching in Korea. Even the Korean teachers like it.

It has catchy tunes, excellent choreography, and an interesting story line for teens. (The bonus DVD also shows dance steps and some hip-hop remixes.)

I also subscribe to www.ksolo.com - a karoake site with a huge selection of songs...
