Then you have RACETRAITOR using the guy's picture as an avatar, which i thought was sort of creepy and disgusting. So you have people here that were looking up to the guy, teaching kids. Imagine knowing a teacher that kept a picture of a pedophile to represent himself. That's creepy. It's like one of your workers walking into work with the guy's face on their T-shirt.

I interpreted RACETRAITOR's avatar as a sort of PSA, getting the guy's face out there that much more, not hero worship |

I hardly think he was 'looking up to the guy' or condoning kiddy fiddling. That is a bit of a jump to make. |

Nothing in the Korean or Thai papers that I can see so far. Story just appears to be breaking on BBC and CNN. Kermo said she thought the guy looked familiar then said she could say nothing since there was an ongoing investigation. I wonder if she can shed some more light on it now? |

Ouch, Jeff. I feel sorry for you after posting something like this. I mean, seriously. Do you really think he had the pic as his avatar because he likes the guy? Good lord... |

background checks are good and all, but i'd imagine that a truly devious pedophile would commit his crimes in a third country so they wouldn't show up on his background check in his home country. |

I wouldn't if I were her. I'd just wait until he's apprehended and let the media tell us all his name & nationality. I'll wager it won't be a long wait. Just in the unlikely case that it turns out it wasn't the guy she suspects. Again, very unlikely, but that's the side I'd err on.
However, we can speculate on what the media has already told us, that he was living & teaching in Korea and that he suddenly flew to Thailand. I find that puzzling, how the criminal mind operates. Or how the "running scared" criminal mind operates.
Okay, so the jig is up. They've unmasked you. Your face is all over the Net. The heat is on. What to do? What's the logical first step? Well, apparently, it's to completely drop out of sight, flee your job, apartment, and the country. (Yeah, THAT won't raise any eyebrows. ) And where do you go? Why of course you make a beeline straight to the scene of the crime (more or less). What makes Thailand an obviously safer hideout than South Korea? Or anywhere else?

What I was thinking. No amount of background checking would have red-flagged/prevented this guy from getting a visa to teach in Korea if he wasn't known as a pedophile by any authorities in any country. Interpol didn't know his name till this week.
As for the "truly devious" bit, I dunno... Seems like more forethought & planning than many are capable of. I mean, isn't it possible that he & others jumped through the hoops, got their backgrounds checked, and received their teacher visas from Korean Immigration first, and then flew down to SE Asia and, in effect, became pedophiles? Or are pedophiles all just born that way? |

Well, that may be, and I can't recall seeing anything really dodgy from RACETRAITOR, but if I were him I'd still be feeling very, very stupid right now. |

Sorry guys, but you are really really wrong if you don't think the Korean media are not going to pick up on this. An international search for a guy accused of abusing kids, with Korea at the centre of it, the opportunity to play the victim card and the opportunity to once more criticize English teachers here, man this is THE perfect story. This will blow up i guarantee it. |

There are some reasons why I admire the Iranian Justice system versus the deluded West... (of course I stand with Dante on the fate of Islam's founder sad though that Hell must be so). But, one can only hope the man is slain in some backwater Cambodian border town by a gut stabbing, this of course would allow him some sublime and crystal epiphany time to have a moment of grace in his much needed exit. |

I do agree it was in poor taste. Personally I would not have done it. But I still don't think racetraitor is advocating the abuse of children. |

Anyone who reads this board knows about the search for the pedophile and that Racetraitor doesn't condone kiddy porn.
There's nothing wrong with him having that picture as an avatar. Interpol and the media WANT and NEED that picture out everywhere, all over the world. Having it reappear on forums is a GREAT IDEA, especially one involving teaching ESL to children.
What if some newbie said, "Racetraitor, I just moved here and your avatar is a picture of my next door neighbor. Who is he? Is that your picture?" Then Racetraitor and the rest of the community would say, "Call the police now, the guy in the picture needs to be locked up."
If this happened, though it's a slim chance, would some of you still think the avatar is a bad idea?
No harm can come from having a simple picture up, especially when the guy is wanted for horrible things. |
