Any boarders out there?? Skate or snow..... where are the spots at?? Looking for some snow action, but want to not only know where to go, but how a guy without a car can get there.... approx travel times and approx prices for trans, lifts etc.
Also anyone up for a trip to the slopes??

yeah I havent skated for at least 6 years, but need some exercise and thought I'd get back into it....so Im back to noob status......d'oh
still the snow should be a blast.....

phoenix park is only a couple of hours west of seoul. costs 10,000 to get there (won, not dollars.) i don't know anything about snowboarding except that i'd look totally cool and smooth if i was good at it, so i can't really comment on the quality of the slope. I can comment on the quality of the music piped over the field, but decline to do it here.

re: lift prices

scamming an (almost) free day or three is cake.

try to hook up with some k-guys who work at board shops. groups of them usually rent a place over the winter. the guys i know pay 300,000 for full access to a house over for the season, people not in on the original deal pay 15,000 a night.

for actual bus schedules try checking tourism websites etc.

ji san is close but there are so many people it isnt worth it, unless you go during the week when everyone is at work. runs are really short.

yongpyong(?) the snow is good and the runs are longer than other closer resorts.

alps had the best quality of snow but only been there once so not sure if it is consistant. also longer courses.

been to a few other resorts but nothing special.

i cant remember the lift prices at the moment, i am not very good at remembering prices, but there are always discounts that you get on the internet that you print out before you go up.
not too sure how that was done cos it is in korean, but we do it all the time, every season.

Here's the scoop:

If you're looking to do some boarding, first find out when the slopes will open. It would look stupid if you just drove up there and the mountain is closed. I'm writing from Canada so don't have that info.

Second, there is always someone (this will be your students, if you teach kids then hustle their moms for them) who will have free passes to some mountain. I've been to Daemyun and Phoenix and they're both alright. {Advice: if you go to Daeymyun, on one run there is a section off to the right that is lined with moguls-one after the other. I don't know this term cuz it's for skiers. I tried it once and cuz I went into it so fast, fell, dragged my ass over 3 moguls. That really hurts. But the kicker at the end makes it all worthwhile. Stay to the very right, avoid the killer moguls, and line that jump up good. If you go into it goofy (of fakie if you're stance is regular) then it's perfect. I don't care what you do with the jump, just watch those moguls!!!}
Go on a Sunday and you'll be looking at 30 minute lines to any lift. Saturdays are better. (The ideal thing to do is save all your sick-days and use them up during the season on the mountain).

If you're taking the bus, basically the ideal place to catch it is at Jamsil (if you're in Seoul, of course). You can find a bus that will go to any mountain from there. Now the last time I checked, I (or someone I knew) had to make a reservations for the bus beforehand.

Okay, renting: DON'T RENT AT THE MOUNTAIN!!!
1) They are not likely to have a board your size.
2) The boards they do have all lick.
3) They charge an arm and a leg.
If you're taking the bus, then you'll have to rent something in town first. Go to (dang, I forget the name of the area) ________ and find a board there. DON'T BUY A NEW DECK IN SEOUL-THEY ARE SO EXPENSIVE. You'll save more money by renting each time. If you are smart, then you will have brought your own. Oh, I forget, you said you're were a noob, right? My bad.

If you plan to go up every weekend then do what my co-worker did. Buy a full season pass(Phoenix would be the ideal one) and a season bus pass. Then you'll have no excuses not to board.

I bought a season pass to Yongpyong. The cost was 450,000 but they have gone up to 530,000 I think. Do a Google search and you will find all the resort info you need. I plan on being there every weekend so if you think you can keep up with a girl let me know and we can ride for a day. As for equipment, I'm having a friend help with Korean auction sites. Does anyone have another suggestion? Thanks...

Hang out in the car park and you'll find other skiiers/boarders that'll be tripping over themselves to sell you their all day pass when they've finished with it in the early afternoon. You can then get a very cheap afternoon/evening of boarding in... can't remember how I paid... around 15,000 won?

As an aside, I just came back from a 5 day break (hence my lack of recent posts) and had an absolute blast with my friends.

One of my mates has this thing called a carveboard, and it's a complete engineering marvel.

Sorta like a surfboard on trucks and pneumaticwheels at the edges, a lot of ground clearance and solid pivots. Looks a lot like a skateboard with bigger ground clearance and the trucks at the edge of the board.

Anyway, this thing is amazing, and designed for concrete slopes. The way the thing moves, is a lot like a snowboard/surfboard, and you can really carve up the pavement. Doesn't work on grass as there's no traction, but it moves in a completely awesome way. Not cheap, but might be worth a look into.

Those carveboards look pretty dope jaebea. It's funny you mentioned grass because I just saw on RealTV the other night some footage of "grass-boards". Yeah, apparently it's another new trend and they were showing guys carving on grass!!! going downhill and one actually pulled some sort of method air off a jump or something. Of course he bailed (because I can't imagine anyone stomping one of those) but it looked fun anyway!!!
