South Korea faces mounting rate of "twilight divorce"
Quote: |
South Korea, whose divorce rate ranked as the world's highest in 2003, is facing a new social problem: "twilight divorce." Twilight divorce, which refers to divorce of couples in their 50s or 60s -- usually after most of their children have married -- was barely a problem in South Korea in the past, but in recent years has emerged as a budding social concern. |

I heard its even worse here in the countryside because there are too many men who simply can't afford a wife so she files for divorce (well, this is what one of my male coteachers said, so...) |

if they're unhappy, it's best to dissolve the marriage. 'nuff said. |

agreed, a high divorce rate represents freedom.
Maybe it'll force K-men to treat the women better. |

Korea has a high divorce rate according to studies. The real rate is actually higher.
Most couples who get married don't report their marriage until they have kids. Then if they want to dissolve it, it's just like being bf/gf.
The real rate of divorce has got to be at least 10% higher, if not more. |

Same is happening in Japan. After 4 years I've yet to see a Korean man open a door for a woman. Neanderthals. |

Has anyone seen a divorced public school teacher or know of a divorced teacher? I think the shame of it is too great seeing as though you can't lie your way around it as everyone knows you or has taught with you at one time or another. Plus they have kids ASAP to take advantage of their maternity leave. |

A woman recently divorced from my wife's school and she retired. As far as I know, there wasn't any pressure put on her. My wife said she just couldn't face the students after divorcing.
Fortunately, she is independently wealthy as she made a number of highly successful real-estate investments. She also came from a very affluent family. |

This doesn't make sense to me. You'd think that with the real estate market as it is today that the couple would need the parents to buy them an apartment with the proceeds of the wedding gifts. Also it's quite rare to see Korean couple living together before they're married... at least, it's difficult to find someone who will admit to it. |

Times are changing, Kermo.
My lady goes shopping at the store down the street, and often sees "date buddies" as she calls them, shopping for groceries early in the morning. She is appalled, because, "They talk like they live together, yet it is obvious they are too young to be married."
She thinks lots of students are living together these days, or lie to the parents about where they are actually spending their nights.
Obviously kids from out of town who don't have family to live with in town.
I'll bet she's right. |
