i've checked their website, and it says 20kilos for economy.
my friends checked in almost double coming from UK, and weren't charged, but i'm wondering do the staff at incheon enforce luggage restrictions?

I checked in 25kgs when coming from Heathrow, the check in attendant didn't bat and eyelid.
Are you flying via Dubai?
If so then they have a restriction of around 35kgs (per bag) and the handlers at Dubai will not touch it if it is over (health and safety law).
I would suggest calling Emirates and discussing it. |

Uh so which is it. 20kg or 35kg? Per bag? How many bags allowed? AFAIK it's different for the carry-on and main bag.

The outgoing airline is who charges. Korean immigration doesn't care how much you luggage weighs. IE: Americans can have 2 pieces weighing 50 lbs. each no problem, but someone flying from Praha can have half that. |

Even if the airline regulation says xxkg, a lot depends simply on the person who checks you in. A smile, a firendly way of dealing with that person, and an overall pleasantness, will often save you the charges for a "too heavy" suitcase. The opposite attitutde may also cause the check-in person ro look for some obscure regulation that allows them to stick it to you. |

A good rule of thumb...
Coming from north america you are allowed to have 40 kgs...
Coming from the rest of the world it is 20 kgs....
i have no idea why there is sucha big difference but it catches a lot of North americans out as they have no idea... |

I recently flew Emirates originating in Cyprus. I was held to the 20 kg limit and charged an arm and a leg to keep my stuff. (around US$75 per kilo!!) Thank god they didn't bother to weigh my carry-on... |

maybe just my experience, i flew from incheon to london with emirates. i had 27kg and they made me knock it down to 24kg they also wouldn't let me take more than 7kg in hand luggage. They got extremely strict. I wearing half my clothes through check in.
However maybe i just went when they were having an inspection or something. I know to the US you can take far more. |

The general rule is - NA, 2 bags max 50lbs each.
Everywhere else, 20 kg in as many bags as you like. |

Can we get any confirmations? I'm going to fly Emirates from UK. I need to know if I can bring two cases and one carryon. I was going to buy the largest size case (the rolling ones with handles) but now I'll just buy two of the sizes just below if I CAN take two. |

Take 20 cases of 1kg each if you want.
Do not exceed 20 kg total.
If prepared to pay excess baggage, make sure no single case exceeds 35kg. |

It really doesn't matter what the rules are. I often fly the same international route with the same airline, and get widely differing answers from the staff. Generally I find the Heathrow staff to be some of the most anally retentive about luggage weight, whereas in Paris and all of Spain they will just wave you on through.
It's more about luck and whether the airport staff have had a good day.
It's better to be safe and take a bit less. Honestly, twenty kilograms isn't that bad. |

just to update, my friends had a total of 69kilos in 2 cases
they weren't charged excess luggage fees, but checkin did ask them to divide their stuff into 3 pieces of luggage rather than 2 as they won't accept anything over 35kilos
good luck with your travels people |

I have found that as well...you never know what to expect.
Even at the same airport with the same airline i have had greatly differing experiences....a lot will depend on how full the plane is, whether you have checked in early (which is better) or later, and as you said the personality and mood of the check-in person...
For example I often fly JAL though Narita and stopover in Tokyo to see friends or just chill there...3 times in 6 months, all overweight and all different experiences in the same airport with the same airline.
First time: I was perhaps 8kg overweight and the check-in girl made a bit of a huff and we had a few minutes stand-off and then she finally let me on the plane with the classic warning "This time it is Ok, but next time don't do it". yeah, i don't think i will see you again or you won't remember me sweetheart...
second time: I was very overweight by around 10 kgs and while i was ready to pack some into my carry-on, which was very light not a word was said. "Just have a nice flight".....
Third time: had a big problem. This time i was only maybe 5 kilos over but she wouldn't let em on without me paying the fine. While we were discussing she checked the people behind me in. the guy was a whopping 15 kgs over but not a word was said due to the fact the passenger was part of a tour group. I pointed out you let that person on but not myself and said i wanted to complain. I was checked-in.....
The only thing you can count on is inconsistency.... |
