When Koreans ask me why I'm happy, I reply with much alacrity "Why, I'm not Korean!"

In other words, I can leave all this rat race nonsense (with my happy Korean wife in tow) any day of the week, thank you very much Mr. American passport, and return only for visits and to oversee my inchoate Gimchi/Ramen/Soju smuggling operations.

How can korean kids feel like they belong when they have to attend classes all day long. Go to school, attend classes. Get out of school go to this hogwan. Get out of this hogwan and go to that hogwan. Get out of that hogwan and go to the other hogwan. And so on and so forth.
Also the pressure for them to fit in (what ever in is in) is very intense. Much more so than back home i would imagine. what it takes for the kids to differentiate themselves from others is probably very small. I feel sorry for these kids. They have a tough life.

I understand what you mean. They don't all seem so happy. But I have to agree with yaya. I don't notice many posters with as much griping as you have put on this board, although I gripe a good bit myself. Maybe you are happier in real life? There must be something about Korean society that makes them look glum a lot. I mean they rarely smile except perhaps among close friends, and they are pretty exclusive among themselves. If I couldn't be friends with someone because he was a year older or younger that might bother me! Or if because he went to a better UNiversity, or I had a better job, or whatever. They are very exclusive and to me it seems sad.

Rapier, and les moderales, I'm not going to say that you're a stupid, no good, overgeneralizing waste of space, but I am going to say that this topic is. Please qualify your complaints or take your venting elsewhere.

I might as well ask why Americans are so afraid of everything? Black men on the streets, germs in the air, arabs...WHY OH WHY? Is michael moore right? Is our culture of fear programmed from the protestant persecution?

From my experience there are two world's to Corean life, the outside public life, and the family and friends life, and you have obviously never been exposed to the latter.

The Coreans I know who have allowed me into their inner circles are bombastically joyful, playful, and, in general, merry. Yes, when we get on the subway we generally tone it down a notch. But it amazes me to no end how close and affectionate they can be with the shopkeepers/merchants that they go to on a regular basis.

My dad owned a restaurant back in the states, and while he was friendly and cordgial with all his costumers, especially the regs, it was nothing close to the comradarie they express here.

Your post doesn't reflect reality, it shows a sad perspective (yours) and a lack of understanding (yours).

And what's more, Corean traditions/religions emphasize enjoying the here n' now. Unlike western x-tianity that focuses on your 'afterlife'.

Why are westerners so silly about sinning? Get out and have premarital sex for crying out loud! And when you're married it's okay to get the occasional BJ from the staff intern!

I'd add that this thread is not a waste of space but pointing that you think it is - IS a waste of space.

Furthermore, I'd like to add that it is KOREA in English, NOT COREA and that you give into the Korena governments (North and South) INSANE, ASSENINE, COMPLETELY FALSE belief that Korea was given a "K" in English tansliteration under Japanese influence because "K" comes after "J" and Japan is really "Nippon" and thus comes after "K" or "C".

That makes you and ASSCLOWN.

So, if you're going to start dishing out the cricket paddle of justice then be a man and bend over for us first and set the example. Once you've had your hiding the rest of us will line up - as FAIR is FAIR.

While it's fun to jump someone's bones for using "Corea", it's not like Drakoi is pressing anyone else to use it. Let's focus on the actual points made.

I stand by my statement that Seoul is not Korea. So many foreigners are in Seoul, and I'm quite happy to have had a totally different(albeit boring) experience in Cheonana. I've seen happy people. You guys up in Seoul haven't.

If you think Koreans look angry, that's great. And if I've got to disprove your hypothesis, I'll take you into a kalbi shop and let you see just how glum and pissy everyone is.
