I just got back from 2 weeks in Mongolia. Fantastic! Great weather...Hot but with NO HUMIDITY. The people were pretty friendly (which at this point means that no one pointed at me ) The landscape is just breathtaking. I definitely want to go back. I traveled from the capital and headed South. I have a ton of pictures on flickr but unfortunately hit a bandwidth ceiling so I have to wait to load up the rest of my pictures.
I will say that there were quite a few Koreans and Korean products in Mongolia. I was surprised and then disgusted when I had to drink Korean beer because that was all that was available....Just my luck
In any event, I will show a few of my favorites with a brief byline and go from there....
These are pictures of Baga Gazin Chuluu located in the Gobi region. Apparently some monks left some rock drawings that people make pilgrimages to.
Bayanzag "The Flaming Cliffs" This area unearthed a number of dinosaur bones and eggs. The ger camp in the area has a turtle (or tortoise) restaurant! The area is quite interesting and I got to ride a camel while there...Woohoo!
Yolyn Am in the Gurvan Saikhan National Park. Keep in mind that this is in the Gobi Desert. It looks like it was in Lord of the Rings or Scotland!
That is all for now. I'll add more in the coming weeks!

Very cool! I hope you were able to recharge your batteries for the remainder of your time in Korea. |

Great pictures. We are planning on stopping in Mongolia as part of the trans-siberian railroad. I can't wait to hear more about your adventures, as we are planning our trip. Thanks! |

Do you know if this is a traditional Mongolian outfit? I took the the picture at a Lunar New Year festival in Korea, but was told by Koreans that they are not Koreans.

Ah..right now I'm thinking about Mongolian vodka, fermented mare's milk (suprisingly better than it sounds) and racing around near the Gobi desert on half wild Mongolian ponies....
I definitely want to go back, too... |

Does UlaanBaatan have any cool bars or clubs or anything worth mentioning? |

The 'New York Pizza' place in Peace Street UB, had great food & a bar. But no live entertainment. Probably at Western prices too, but I didn't care. A lot of cheaper places had HITE & CASS Korean beer. It's not safe to be out after 10pm anyway. Use common sense at night, & stick to well-lit, main streets. There are something like 300 street urchins still living in the sewers of UB, & some of them come out at night, & harass tourists even more vigourously than in the daytime. If they ask for money, give them food instead. There are smashed vodka & beer bottles all over the city (& a lot of the countryside, too). You're not in Korea anymore, Toto! But don't judge Mongolia on crappy UB. The countryside outside the mediocre city is breathtaking. |

Wow. Those are great pictures! Where did you fly into? How much did it cost? Did you go with a travel agent or just roam around? Any recommendations for someone hoping to go there for 2 weeks next summer (flying from Seoul)? |
