i don't listen to as much hip-hop at the moment since i'm in korea and don't have a CD player etc. i guess that's why i'm into the korean hip-hop scene at the moment.
but gotta say, old skool is definetly better than the new stuff.(except for Jurassic 5 and Hiero). |

I'm not that old yet; still 25 years young. But I can remember the good 'ole days when quality hip-hop was released by major record labels (nowadays there are only a handful of MCs/groups inked to the majors). Now, a lot of indy hip-hop is dope, but far too much of it is complete garbage, and if not that, it's mediocre -- which can be worse. There are a slew of MCs who, after getting dropped by their label, went on the indy circuit and released trash (of course, the same can be said for MCs still signed). I guess what really irks me is that, when the indy scene started to blow up, most of the music was decent. But these days there's so much garbage to sift through -- and being in Korea doesn'y help matters that much either; I don't listen to beats on the computer -- that I find I haven't got the damn time.
Honestly, the only cats I'm feeling these days are Def Jux, the Roots, and Outkast; and Outkast is pretty much defunct if you believe some of the recent articles about them -- that's depressing!
Y'know what group is getting mad rotation these days? The Smiths. No lie.

Never that. Wifey actually likes hip-hop, and she plays it for the baby. I, mind you, have somewhat of a conscience, and prefer to play Mozart, Pet Sounds and other sorts of angst and anger-free music. I came home the other evening and she was bumping El-P:
"Don't make me bite your face/ 'cause it ain't like I like the taste/ it's more of a psychological thing/ my heart pacer never change/ but your cabbage can get rearranged...
Very creative music-wise, but I guess you can see where my objection lies (hey! that ryhmes. You wanna battle me?).
Something I didn't have time to get out yesterday was that, as much as I'll always have an affinity for hip-hop, it's hard to really get into the music when you've outgrown its subject matter. I can throw NWA's Straight Outta Compton on, and it's still a classic, but it's dated -- not by the music, but by my own adulthood. When I was in elementary school, the music was rebellious and alluring. Now, it's a parody of itself. I can't listen to the lyrics with a serious expression -- if I did I'd probably be psychotic. The groups I mentioned in my previous post, for the most part, make music that's accessible to an older audience as well (though they still know who their core demographic is). The ironic thing is that I'm 25: younger than most of the well-established artists who still rap about guns, drugs and hoes. And I don't want to be the aging dude, still stuck on music that is immeasurably immature (let 80's hair-metal be a warning to all ye thugs).
[Warning: tangent ahead. Proceed with caution]
What hip-hop is sorely lacking is introspection. And when it's used, it's rarely done effectively. When most "underground" artists try to rap as though they're intellectual and sensitive, nine times out of ten it comes across so corny it's embarrassing. Chalk that up to a generation raised on meaninglessness in music. And perhaps meaningless pop culture in general. I'm probably generalizing a little too much, but in hip-hop, lack of creativity (coinciding with the death of sampling), combined with a "talent pool" that -- as James Brown once said -- is talking loud and saying nothing, has made said talent pool significantly watered down. As a purist, I yearn for the days of '87 or '94; but if there is going to be a new rennaisance in hip-hop, I'm afraid it's far off.
Part of this post is me playing the the devil's advocate. There's an Aesop Rock track in which he states 'what are you saving?... honestly, promise me you're gonna shut the f*ck up and recognize what you're holdin' ain't really broken'. I try to keep that attitude for the most part and dismiss people lamenting the "death" of hip-hop. Hip-hop surely isn't dead, but the truth is that, with a few exceptions, hip-hop isn't groundbreaking anymore.
Now ask yourself homeboy, 'why is that?'

Our first single, "Live at the BBQ (Chicken Hof)" should be hitting the airwaves very shortly. Pump it at the PC Bang, playas. |
