What's your take on Apocalypto? Was the omen a legend or something similar to what'd happened to the Aztecs of Mexico? Do you think the omen indicated the Spanish were going to conquer the Incas, that Jaguar Paw led them straight to the Spanish?
The movie was about the Incas, right? I get these guys mixed up. Anyways, I wonder if Jaguar Paw was a true legend or prophecy.
What part of South America was this again? |

You sound really hi.
If you liked the movie, read Gary Jennings' Aztec novels.

Aztec series
Aztec (1980) : A story of the Aztec empire just before and during the arrival of the Spanish.
Aztec Autumn (1998), a story of the Aztecs following the Spanish conquest.
Aztec Blood (2002) : Cristo El Bastardo, a half-caste, sets out to discover the secret of his birth in the new Mexico. *
Aztec Rage (2006) : Set in the early 19th century, it deals with the Mexican war of independence with Spain. *
*The last two books were written by Robert Gleason, Gary's former editor, and Junius Podrug, working from notes that Gary left.

Yes, you do and no it wasn't. It was about the Mayas.
Incas: Peru (Andes) think of them as high altitude
Aztecs: Mexico City and vicinity, medium altitude
Mayas: Yucatan, Guatemala area low altitude |

It was North America, namely Mexico.
Ya-ta Boy is correct. The movie was about the Mayas, not the Incas. |

I always thought it was Mayans?
As in the 'Mayan Riviera'. |

Sorry, that's my ten years of being a Spanish teacher coming through. In Mexico they are "Maya" (or more accurately "los mayas") not Mayan. But, of course, we are speaking English so I should have written "Mayan." My mistake. |

I know I started the disagreement.
But, now that I have researched it looks like both 'Maya' and 'Mayan' are correct.
There is also a Maya people in Australia!

Well I'd just read an article about the Mayans then in National Geographic. There was apparently an important figure who'd hallmarked the origins of their civilization, or conquest, and his name was 'Fire-is-born.'
Crappy civilization, if you ask me. Nonetheless, answer my quesiton if you can: was this omen real or not? Or was it just fiction?
The reason I'd thought it was the Incas is because Gibson had gotten it wrong. The civilization had never been conquered by the Spanish. They'd disintergrated, no?
Apparently there was no talk in NG about the Spanish having conquered them, so I had no other recourse than to think that they were the Incas, whom the Spanish had conquered.
Of course it's been years since I've read up on this, loathing at the reality of their horrible treatment of other humans and I could give a crap about those who practiced such cruelty as human sacrifices.
The omen was a little startling, however, making me wonder if there was any truth behind it, in a historical sense, much like other Indian legends, or myths. |

I guess I missed this omen you keep talking about. Maybe I was in the kitchen making popcorn during that part.
What exactly did the omen say? |

The "omen" was Jaguar Paw. He was prophesied as bringing an end to the Mayan empire, both within their own records and by a little girl right as he and others were being taken into the city.
The Mayans kept on saying that he was "the omen", remember?
Nonetheless, the Spanish weren't even around then, so I doubt it has much bearing in that sense. But if you read NG, it states how another figure began their civilization, but how it ended is still up to debate.
They ended about 800 AD. |

I agree. The Spanish so humanely turned them from their wickedness! |

Watched Apocalypto last night and couldn't take my eyes off it. Mesmerizing film. Non-stop pace. Fantastic imagery. Great action and gore. Heartbreaking tragedy.
It's got everything. |

In his next film Mel runs naked through the jungle with the intestines of the bad guys clenched between his teeth...He's actually very attached to his family and a bit of a renaissance man, but those bad guys *pushed him too far*!!
P.S. I do like Braveheart, and even Apocalypto and Passion, but he does take himself a bit too seriously for me. Thank god none of the *real* Scots in Braveheart were forced to shout out 'Frrrrrrrrrreeeeedum!' cos it would have been a bit painful. |
