I'm feeling really upset right now.
The middle school I teach at recently received some special status as a school for multiculture. This has resulted in special funding, class for learning about different cultures and so forth, and of course status.
So here I was thinking I work at a great school that I thought was progressive.

Well, today was our school sports day. After lunch we had a special program in which each homeroom participated in a parade displaying traditional clothing of a country. Most of the homerooms were fantastic. Japan, Netherlands, India, and Great Britain were fantistic. Howerver, one homeroom came out as Germany and yes...of course....They have one student dressed as Hitler, two students as swastika yielding officers and the rest walking behind as Gestapo or something.

I'm totally disgusted.

They probably don't realize how offensive it is to a westerner. It's like how westerners don't realize flying the Imperal Japanese flag (the one with the sun rays) is highly offensive to Asians.

It's a good oppurtunity to teach them about what's considered offensive in some countries.

You're lucky you're not black (I assume) and no African countries (I assume) were represented. Rolling Eyes

Agreed. But Korea has taught me to let things go. If I got wound up about things like this I'd be pretty pissed off.

I'm intrigued about the Britain display. Was it a load of blinged up chavs, followed by some teenage pregnancies and then topped off by some obese people smoking pot and drinking 'wife beater'.

Yes, I would be very upset. It's time to have a chat with your coworkers. Too bad there are no photos.

I would turn your feelings of anger into a good opportunity to educate your studetns and coworkers. Perhaps, you could offer to teach a class on sensitivity or something.
When I was studying in Austria they displayed the Confederate flag as one of the flags of English speaking countries. I"m from teh south, so I'm used to seein hillbillies running around like jackasses waving that flag, but its still quite offensive to a lot of people for what it represents. The thing was, the austrians just didn't understand what it meant.

I took a picture.

I'm planning to talk to my co-teachers about it first to see what they say.

Our school recently partnered with a middle school in Brighton, England.
That's part of this new culture orientated program. I wonder how the school in England would feel about something like this?

Any suggestions for the German parade?

-People dressed as Volkswagens
-Hamburgers (Although I realise that they were invented in Mongolia)
-Einstein
-Bach, Beethoven (Very famous for their classical composers)
-Having a Female prime minister

Germany thinks about culture like this:

Quote:
And yet this land of culture still has no national authority with overall responsibility for culture for the country as a whole. According to the Basic Law, culture is the responsibility of the individual federal states.

Like the idea of Holland just being a procession of paranoid pothead tourists walking around eating whole cheese cakes, doughnuts, chips, burgers, then some beer, then stopping to watch a squirrel for a bit, before getting the giggles and putting on some sun glasses because of redeye.

Good reply Kat2. It is a good chance to educate them. I think some people need to loosen up a bit. The kids didn't mean anything by it. It would be a little different if they knew how sensitive the topic is with some people. Hey, don't forget Prince Harry did the same thing, so I am sure you can give some Korean kids, who barely speak English, some latitude. Just put things in context and not make such a big deal of it. I once posted the following on a travel forum "I'm looking for advice on where I go in Krakow to best experience what happened in the Haulocast". WELL, I COPPED it. "How dare you use the word 'best experience' in a sentence about the Haulocast". Then a heap of other abuse. All i wanted to do was visit a place to appreciate the magnitude of what happened. YES, it did happen. Yes, word cannot describe how disgraceful the acts were. I couldnt believe it. Sometimes we have to forgive but don't have to forget. Otherwise the Japanese would never be welcomed in a lot of countries. Education is the key!!!!

Think about how many times hollywood has made fun of asians in their films or made the asian the bad guy or the one who is made fun of.

COmpared to what your school did that is nothing compared to what hollywood did or does.

You have an avatar for 4Chan. How the hell could what you saw be more offensive than that?

Very simple. Hollywood isn't a public institution run on government funding. Your analogy is nonsense and weak justification.

I had an avatar that I took off of 4chan.org
4chan.org disabled hotlinking and I haven't bothered to change that.
4chan is open and has offensive material. I don't visit the site at school,
and I would never show it to a student or encourage it.
