I thought I'd be blown away when finally had a chance to game on a big screen LCD, but in fact, the experience simply annoyed me. The game seemed to slow down (not lag, but the response just seemed to slow down), and the pixels were hyper-evident. Are these common symptoms with large LCDs?

What is large? My 21" LCD (I just finished restarting a game in FEAR) runs that bad boy as if you were there with the dude taking everyone out!

Depends totally on the screen.

Response time.

This is the typical complaint from gamers using LCD monitors. Its called tearing; the game seems to lag behind the mouse, like being lagged out in an online game. LCDs that aren't made to be monitors (or TVs first) won't have the best response times (or 'refresh rate', in CRT talk) and what you are experiencing will always be a problem.

16ms is roughly equal to 60Hz, 13ms to 75Hz. So, 13ms would be about as high as one would want to go. Some people claim to be able to see the flicker on a CRT monitor at 75Hz, as some people claim to see tearing at 13ms. It depends then on the person and then the game. An action game will produce more evidence of tearing as the screen needs to reset or refresh faster, and the response time will be maxed out. A slower-moving game will ask less of the monitor, so there will be less perceivable tearing.

Best is to get a panel made for computing. The LCD TVs aren't designed with computing as the main concern, so they may produce a less desirable experience. May. Many are happy with the larger panels, especially on an XBox or the like.

I disagree, the input source is equally, if not more important.

If you have a HD screen and put something like a PS2 or a Gamecube through it, then yes, its going to look less than great. Put a PS3 or 360 in it, and it will typically look excellent.

Most new TV's have response rates of about 5 to 6ms, so that shouldnt really be an issue.

I thought that was called ghosting.

Perhaps I should clarify. I'm playing original Xbox games (like Halo2) on an original Xbox hooked up to a 32 inch HD LCD and the game looks and plays like azz. I've played games on larger screens (40") and they didn't seem to translate well either. Perhaps this is simply an issue with the older consoles, and not the TV?

Maybe I should have said "the TV."

In any case, you misinterpreted what I meant to say.

I'm holding off buying a large LCD TV because, to my eyes, the pixelation/ghosting/tearing on the current models is unacceptable when there's a complex moving image. For example, a soccer game or action movie. I watched part of a soccer game on a friends 47 inch LCD Full HD. The pixelation/ghosting was terrible. CRT seems much better when the content is complex and moving.

TV's were never any good to watch, but computer monitors are the bomb to watch TV, movies, games, and internet on. While I don't have a huge monitor, I would guess that a large monitor would be terrific for games and movies. I use a computer monitor to watch movies and games on which is perfect compared to the old boob tube, while my TV has sat turned off for 10 months straight. I could get cable and run the signal through my computer, but there is nothing worth watching so I download it all. I don't do TV game systems anymore either since TV quality image blows and TV game systems are too limited and expensive.

I'm only concerned with large screen TVs, the kind you can sit ten feet away from and still see.

This is exactly why. The TV probably has a 1366x768 resolution whilst the xbox is probably outputting at around 640x480. The TV then stretches that image to fit the screen, hence the nasty artifacts you are noticing. Stick a 360 through it and it will look great.

Yah you need to run LCD screens in the native resolution if you don't want them to look like crap.

Pick up a 32inch HD CRT... Samsung has a bunch of good ones that are pretty cheap.

No lag, no ghosts, just pure sweetness at an affordable price.
