Jehovah's Witness mother dies after refusing blood transfusion
A 22-year-old mother died just hours after giving birth to twins because doctors were forbidden from giving her a blood transfusion as a Jehovah's Witness.
Emma Gough's family, including her Jehovah's Witness husband, Anthony, 24, refused to overrule her wishes and she died after losing blood.
Mr Gough was reported to be looking after the couple's twin boy and girl at his home in Telford, Shropshire, following the tragedy at the Royal Hospital in Shrewsbury on October 25. |

Awful. Stupid. Crazy. And what about the poor little twins who will never have a mum? |

Should have tazed her until she acquiesced.
I agree though. Absolutely selfish, and the husband should be ashamed of himself. |

Aren't medical decisions personal ones? Or was she comatose?
But, in their eyes, "that's the way God wants it." |

Terrible for the children obviously, but she personally is getting her ass kicked by Darwin and humanity can be relieved such a creature can pollute the genepool no more.
Like the Koreans who suffer and die due to blood shortages.....might be an idea if you stopped refusing foreign blood donations wouldn't it, you morons? If there are Koreans out there who would rather their people suffer and die than have a non-Korean's blood, do say 하이 to Charles Darwin in Heaven for me, won't you? |

One way to look at it I suppose. |

Funny, sounds like giving birth to two children is what killed her. |

The hospital had refused to discuss the case and it is not yet known why Mrs Gough died.
|
Maybe a transfusion wouldn't have saved her? Maybe there was some alternative treatment the hospital could have given her instead? I agree it's terrible, but I'm not going to jump to conclusions about "Darwinism" on the basis of a 242-word newspaper article. |

Good point. People forget that childbirth is a risky process. |

The state has no place meddling in areas such as this.
She was of sound mind & quite willing to die rather than transgress one of her fundamentally principled beliefs.
Upward & onward.

It may be inaccurate reporting, but I'm assuming that (whatever the initial cause) she bled to death, and if she had been given blood, they would have been able to save her.
Childbirth may have been a risky process in the UK a hundred years ago (something like 1 in 5 women died in childbirth in the 19C ?) but this is UK 2007 where the maternal mortality rate is 13 per 100,000 live births. Many women hemorrage in childbirth, but it's very unusual to die. |

I saw the word "because" in the lead, but the article directly contradicts itself: Apparently the hospital wouldn't say how the woman died. If the reporter doesn't have any official confirmation as to the cause of deathsuch as an autopsy report, or a statement from the doctor who treated herwhere are they getting their information? An anonymous informant?
I just think we should be sure we have all the facts before we carve "retard" on the poor woman's tombstone. |

The woman was 22 years old. An adult. She chose her consequences. This is no different than an elderly person refusing emergency measures at the other end of life.
I would have problems if the parents had refused medical treatment for the babies. |

If the news report turns out to be accurate, then I'll have to agree with IGTG (and Ya-ta Boy).
I'm afraid we may be getting an oversimplified version of the story, though ... In many cases, alternative treatments are available in cases where a blood transfusion is the norm, and sometimes these are acceptable to Jehovah's Witnesses. (Not always.) Hospitals have to respect their patients' wishes whether theyre based on religious beliefs or not, and in this case they should have cooperated with the woman to figure out how to treat her without violating her values. Knowing she was a Jehovahs Witness, they should have planned ahead for possible emergencies.
Did they? We don't know, based on this short article. Did the woman know all the risks in advance and decide to get pregnant anyway, or was it an accident? Did she talk to her doctor when she found out she was carrying twins, and did they discuss what would happen if she started hemorrhaging after the birth? Did the hospital do everything they could to save her without a transfusion?
Maybe a more in-depth article would have answered some of those questions.
