I've been in Korea for about 8 months now, manage to party in Hongdae a few times a month, and find myself having a good bit of fun. I am however getting a little bored with the same old spots. Namely - any Ho Bar, Tinpan or Club NB.

To all you Hongdae go-ers, I'm wondering - where do you guys find yourself on a Friday/Saturday night? Criteria might include: music, beverage selection, ratio of foreigners to koreans (or english speakers to non english speakers), environment, ratio of guys to girls, friendly staff, breathability (being able to freely walk around), prices, etc.

I remember when timpan used to be a quiet place to hang with a group of friends and cheap booze.

haha, that was 4 years ago.

my girl needed to use the bathroom in hongdae last weekend. i took her down into tinpan to use the bathroom at 1030pm. jeus fn chsrt. since when is it cool for dudes to dance on tables? girls with tight behinds i understand.

anyway, if you into the underground electronic scene, cargo is good, although currently moving venues.

other then that, i recomend grabby an IV of booze and just trolling the streets. loads of wankers to laugh at.

stay out of the above places you mentioned unless you want a disease.

tinpan is the new limelight and has been for awhile now.

Seconded. I would also add that the Family Mart around the corner from DGBD and Castle Praha is a great place to drink. Best take your warm clothes though, as the weather is cooling down a bit now.

I've been a fan of Sk@ Bar (over Liquid Lounge) for a long time. It's usually packed, with a very eccentric mix of tracks and people.

Noted. That's why I took care to write "Sk@ Bar" instead of just admitting I'm a fan of "Sk@."

This reminds me of the Jackass skit where Chris Pontius randomly goes into places as "Party Boy" in Japan and freaking people out. Have you considered doing that?

If you are into hip hop and actually like to have a bit of room to move (unlike NB, Harlem) and dance (and no, standing near the stage or out on the dance floor while sort of bobbing in the same spot like a penguin does not count as dancing ;p ) then Catchlight is a decent place to go. You'll usually find it busy enough on the weekends after midnight or so. Have gone a couple times with a group of friends before 11 and gotten in free. Those times might have been on weeknights though.

I will say that if your primary reason for going out is to find someone to shack up with then you'd probably want to stick with the usual places.

Note: The Long Island Iced Tea isn't half bad, sure beats the crap out of the one you'll get at NB.

Now if you ever happen to bounce on over to 신촌 check out T12 (Tee One Two). Its a cool little "project bar" on the left side of the main street if you are walking up towards 이대. Its roughly across the street from Choi's Tacos (which has decent burritos and even horchata). The atmosphere is really low key and comfortable, while the music is decent too (usually some type of soft trance/house/electronica They've got all the various forms of 술 you'll find at similar places, but one thing that I've not found elsewhere is the c0cktail 맥주. I personally like the "Punch Punch" for the taste. Check out the "Boom Beer" (맥주, 3oz whiskey, 1oz.... something else) if you are workin' on getting a little buzz.

Couldn't have said it better. Last time I was there was last August, just a couple weeks before my wedding, with a friend who was visiting from China. I thought it would be decent to have some cheap-ass tequilas and people-watch. The moment the male table dancing started was the moment I realized that I would not miss Hongdae after marriage. Any time I do, I just think of that. Honestly.

Any guys out there that do this (especially the ones who make that weird grimacing face while dancing with their hands over their heads): I'm pretty sure it's impossible to look any more desperate. And hilarious.
