In a recent discussion with jinju, I became intrigued with his views on motherhood and decided to inquire further.

Here is a brief insight into the fascinating and rather disturbing world of male breastfeeding.

I knew these two wonderful guys, very dear friends of mine for years. A mutual acquaintance of ours was pregnant, unplanned, and did not want to do the whole "adoption thing" so when the guys approached her about taking the baby, they just proceeded as if it had been a planned surrogate pregnancy. The guys were adamant that the baby should get breastmilk. So when she was in her 7th month we bought a really good quality breastpump and Ian started pumping, every 2 hours during the day and once during the night. He was wonderful about it! He used an SNS (supplimental nursing system) after she was born, with donated milk from several friends who were nursing. He was making milk but not a full supply. By the time the baby was 12 weeks old he was making a full milk supply! He stayed at home with the baby (he was a massage therapist) and nursed her exclusively until she was 8 months old!! I don't think many people outside their intimate circle knew about it, I'm sure folks would have had a fit if they'd known...but I thought it was wonderful!

Why not? It's good news for the baby whose gut didn't get permanently damaged from drinking formula, and who doesn't face a higher risk of SIDS, diabetes and asthma.

The reality of the matter is that this is true. It's as true for jinju as it is for Ian the breastfeeder in the story.

I don't want it to be true either Crying or Very sad

Have studies been done to find out if all men can do it?

Are there any cultures anywhere where men breastfeed regularly?

If male breast milk is the same as female breast milk. Wonder if studies have been done on that.

How could they study it? There are no large populations to study.

I'm just glad this particular kid didn't have to drink formula. Human milk has to be better, even if it's not as good as the biological mom's would have been. An adoptive mother could have breastfed too, but often that doesn't work out. Thats what makes this story really impressive.

Yes, I know there's no large study. It was my way of pointing out that this is nearly as unnatural as humans drinking cow's breast milk.

Humans do drink cow's breast milk....

and goats etc...

Yes - males can produce milk and breastfeed...

No shit, Sherlock. And do you really think that it's natural?

Oh, that's right! I often see cows drinking cat's breast milk and dogs suckling squirrels.

I was not arguing that they can't.

W3nker... I was not arguing that drinking cows milk is natural - but many humans do...

NOR is giving soy-milk-formula to infants natural either - and you never said it was....

You never argued that males can't breastfeed....

and I never argued that males breastfeeding was a good idea...
(obviously males have much more testosterone running through their bloodstream than females - and this would raise the levels much higher in the males milk)....

now your'e arguing that I'm sherlock and I'm arguing that your a w3nker...
