Ok . I've been patiently waiting for the Koreans to reveal their true nature to me . Kind of like chucky the clown doll ...all of a sudden the eyes will change and I'll see it .

Before arrival I was assured that Koreans are just horrible , horrible !! On every turn people will spit at me and mumble for me to "go home" . No one would help me or be friendly in anyway , rather they would scowl and look upon me as a veritable tower of turd .

I've only been here 5 months , but I've just not seen it . ANY of it .

So when will I finally be saved from my illusions ?? If not careful , I might very soon just drop my guard and paranoia and quite like the Koreans . Romanced into an evil trance by their seemingly very plesant and polite demenour .

Heeeeeellllp !!!

Please don't. Think of our reputation. Together we, as teachers, must stand and say, "We hate Korea" or else people will want to come here and teach and make money and enjoy the easy life that we are already enjoying. Then wages will go down and the quality of life will diminish. Again, don't, for our sakes.

Sorry, but the rudeness is there. Take an escalator and see how many Koreans block others from walking up by standing on the left side (when they're supposed to stand on the right). Or how many Koreans all of a sudden stop in front of an entrance, blocking it. Or pushing in a subway or other place, never saying excuse me or such. Or talking loudly on the phone on the bus or subway.

I could go on and on but thinking about it gets me down.

We're pretty rude too. Pouring our own drinks, ignoring White Day, handing money to people with our left hands. It's no wonder western civilisation hasn't crumbled beause of it.

Except for that if you ask a Korean, they will also say that the other behaviour is rude.

And if you ask a foreigner, they will always say that ignoring a country's customs is rude. Yet.....

It hits at 6 or 7 months. Before that, you noticed Koreans giggling behind your back and you thought it was cute. You thought people just misunderstood you some places. You thought they were only CURIOUS.

Oh no.

They understand you, they just don't want to speak to you. And, really, they're just giggling because they think you look like a monkey. And if they are nice, believe me, they're FAKING.

Have you ever met a foreigner that didn't do the "pouring with two hands" "money with right hand" etc. crap? Seems to me foreigners almost always bend over backwards to do things the "Korean" way. But that's our burden, isn't it. We come from civilized countries. We have to adapt to them. They go to our countries, and we still have to adapt to them.

OP, ride the subway. You'll find a handful of rude Koreans before you can bat an eye.

Personally, I've never met a rude Korean...drunk ones that's a different tune, though. But, I'm rude to when I'm drunk sometimes. It's an urban myth... Very Happy

I don't think they are all that rude. Totally oblivious and mildly socially retarded maybe. But I don't have a lot of good things to say about most foreigners either lately.

Now my students...THEY can be rude.

Are they rude or do they live in a bubble?Shouting on the phone on the bus, blocking everyone with their shopping trolley-they simply don't "see" other people.Letting their kid jump on the table at McDs and pee in a cup when the toilet is in plain view?Well,I'm at home really.Public space??How,what??Who are you to scowl at me?Peasant behaviour.

Not extending the same etiquette or rules of courtesy because you're not Korean and therefore not seen as someone necessary to acknowledge?Yeah, that's pretty rude, but it links into the first point. Not that I care for it.
