|
|
A female student of mine - middle school 3rd year - is desperate to go to high school in Canada and she wants to go alone. I told her high school in Canada is totally different than Korea. Sex, drugs, shootings, etc. It seems dangerous.
Today her mother called a teacher to ask my opinion and I'm not totally sure what to say. I was thinking of suggesting a month or two at a private ESL school during the winter or summer break.
Am I being paranoid? |

What shootings in high schools? I have never heard of shootings in high school. You are think of the states. We had a few shootings in Colleges but that all happen in Quebec so it does not count. |

OK sorry I stand corrected there has been shootings. But some of those happen years ago. But I think she has about the chance of getting shot in school while in Canada, as the same chance I have getting to have sex with Jessica Alba and winning the lottery all on the same day. |

She has more of a chance of getting hit by a rogue scooter on the sidewalk in Korea, than she does getting shot in a High School in Canada.
I think it could be very educational for her. If she's that determined, I wouldn't want to be the one to discourage her. Be honest about what she should expect, and what the differences are, but be supportive.
Sure, there is sex in High School in Canada. Big deal. She'll get an education. It doesn't mean she will turn into a sexual deviant.
I think so long as you offer honest advice, and are helpful, she could have a great experience, and have an easier time adjusting to the change if you are there to offer tips. I grew up in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and a friend of mine had a High School student from Japan living in her home for a year. It was a great experience for her. The most outlandish thing she did was get her ears pierced. Her mother came to visit her and was okay with it. The girl went home to Japan for one year, but came back to Nova Scotia to go to University, and to be with a guy that she met in High School who fell head over heels for her.
Tell her to do her research, and be as prepared as she can be, but I wouldn't want to be the one who discourages a child for wanting an experience of a lifetime. |

If she's willing to go, why hold her back? The same things that can happen in Canada can happen here. If she's gungho about it, then there's a spirit of adventure inside her, and it would be a horrible thing to squash that. |

Is her family rich? If so, maybe a private school.
Also, is her english good? Good enought to do all her subjects in english? Possibly willing to be held back a year? I'm sure she'll do well in math and science, but if her english isn't up to snuff she'll suffer writing those damn essays for the artsie subjects like english and history.
Schools are for sure more violent and drugs are a big issue in almost every public high school. Personally I think she should stick it out her 3 more years in Korea and then aim for university in Canada. But, it would be an interesting experience. |

I doubt she will be a victim of a shooting.
she will be some asian girl in the back of the class with the off the charts math grades! making friends with other koreans.. she will will hardly be with the IN crowd! or the losers pushing drugs, smoking behind the bike sheds, going to house parties on friday nights..
also I doubt her mum will choose the school in the inner city. there are plenty of good schools in canada.. |

I think your right. I guess I was just thinking about the high school I went to which was a small town, red neck school in BC. So you can just imagine. Anyway, like you say, I'm sure her mom will choose a good school. One that has heating in the winter at the very least |

Actually I have no idea. I've met some Korean English teachers that are like 27 and tell me they can't go on the pill because their mom won't let them. Not to mention my K friends who barely touch each other despite the fact they've been going out for like eight months. I haven't been in Korea for a long time so I'm not sure. That's why I am asking for advice. So why don't you offer some since you seem so seem to be so knowledgeable. |

I know of a really good high school in Canada which has an international program. I know of a couple of Korean students who loved the program. The school is located on a small island on the west coast.
Here is the link to their international program website:

Plus, here is the general website for the school:
