Anyone have any insight/suggestions/warnings about having an interview with the Korean consulates in the US? I am going to have an interview at the consulate in Houston, and would like to know what to expect and how to prepare for it. Thanks. |

That sure is a shame, you having to drive all the way to Houston, no matter where you are in Louisiana. I have some questions for you:
1. Is your potential employer going to reimburse you for the cost of your gas (which is skyrocketing now, right?) and hotel? (I would also add mileage but I'm a bit of a tight-ass)
and
2. Were you already offered the job pending the interview, or will you find out your employer's decision after the interview?

I hope you got a VERY good job. Maybe you'd like to post the details? Don't jump through all these BS hoops and then land in a lame situation.
You know, for the amount of people who come here, then get screwed on their benefits...the fact that the korean government is making getting a visa a hassle would make those kinds of arrangements an even bigger slap on the face.
When I have problems with my employer, I usually shrug it off: "Well it took no effort to get here, you get what you pay for."
I know this has been said a hundred times the past week, but if Korea is going to up its expectations of teachers, it had damn well better do the same of its schools and academies. |

I was thinking about a situation related to this today: Does the interview grant you permission to get an E-2 visa for a certain period of time, or is it a contract by contract basis.
With the shady, lying hogwans operating, we've all hear stories of hogwans pulling out of the deal at the last minute. What if a trip to Houston was finished and the hogwan said "nevermind." |

This is a VERY important point. It's already been said that those applying for interviews must have ALL these things turned in AT the interview(medical check, background check, notarized/apostilized diploma, all at your expense), i would imagine you'd also have to submit an actual contract/job offer from your employer, so what happens if after spending a few thousand bucks on all those things, a plane ticket, hotel while waiting for the results of your medical check and background check to come back(most state checks in the U.S. say 5-10 business days), then your employer backs out(maybe this all took too long so he BOUGHT a teacher already in Korea from another hagwan by having his contact TRANSFERED over. Are you left SOL? And what if you do all this and after you get to Korea your employer starts ripping you off? not paying your whole salary, deducting things from your pay that aren't warranted, or even just making your life a living hell? if after 6 months you quit, would you have to go back and set up ANOTHER interview and get a NEW medical checkup and backgound check, also at YOUR expense? I can really see unethical hagwan owners taking advantage of this situation. It basically puts English teachers in the same situation as 3D workers, one that is highly conducive to being ripped off and taken advantage of, with little or no recourse. This is a human rights violation waiting to happen. |
Excellent posts. Though I kinda think this is a put-on. I didn't think any of this went into effect until December, and even then, no one at Immi has been given any details yet.
Anyone know where I can take Chinese lessons in Korea so I can get a jump on the language before I go to Taiwan after this contract? |

Oh jeez, my OP seems to have been a bit confusing...I am going to have a consulate interview for a PS position in GWD. This has been standard practice for PS gigs, so I was seeing if anyone else has gone through this process. I wouldn't take a Hagwon position, personally, and certainly not if it required a consulate interview. |

did you actually have to show up with Police Check, Medical papers, notarized this and that all in hand? Did they guarentee you a job after the interview or are you still on hold???
Guess I choose the wrong time to apply for my first job in Korea. All these new rules put an ENORMOUS expense up front....the cost of that med exam alone is a small fortune (at least here in the US)....testing for Hep B and Hep C!! Wouldn't mind if these things were AFTER a SECURE and REGULATED job was in place, but as part of the application process, they have got to be kidding!! |

Consulate interviews are NOT standard practice, repeat NOT STANDARD PRACTICE, for any E-2 visa position. Why did you say this?
Deubel, you are a great resource for teachers, but your statement "you'll be fine" is completely naive given the nature of hogwan reputations and the lack of details about the new E-2 visa requirements. |

In relation to the tests for Hep B and Hep C that you mentioned you need to have done, i have been given a "Medical Examination Form" which lists Hep A and B, not Hep C. Do you have the correct form or do i have the correct form?
Also, what would stop you from giving whatever medical sheet you have to your doctor and telling him to just ignore the section of the form dealing with blood test results for HIV and the Hep diseases (whichever ones your form tells you you need to have done), fill in the rest, sign it and, perhaps, stamp it with something (always a winner in the Far East!) and then put crosses in the appropriate boxes for the sections he ignored after the event??? You would save money on not having to take those blood tests and no one would be able to prove that your doctor did not check those boxes!!! Just an idea anyway....interested in people's thoughts on this....
Finally, one experienced recruiter told me he is sure i do not have to have those blood tests for Hepatitis and HIV, and that i just needed a standard medical check. Basically, what i want to know is what tests i need to have done here in England? Standard check or the full x-ray, blood work

I downloaded a form from the EPIK (or from "a" EPIK) Website. For blood work they required HEP B and HEP C along with CBC, ALT/AST. HIV, VD.
I wish it WAS just Hep A/B as I had both those vaccinations 5 years ago.
As far as leaving things blank and then checking them after the DR. signs it....you'd be hard-pressed to find any Dr. here in the US to knowingly or unknowingly do it that way! At least that has been my experience.
Truth be known, I don't think ANYONE at this particular moment has a definitive answer as to EXACTLY what is and is not needed, or how and how not to go about the application process right now.
When someone has successfully completed this application process and has been told that all is in order and nothing more is required other than purchasing their air-ticket...I hope they will post here so we can all figure out what we do and do not need to have done. |

Gonna try my idea out on my doctor anyway...i would rather not though, but to get everything done that the examination form i have here requires would cost me a fortune here in the UK. Maybe i should just wait until December 1st when the new rules come into being and see what the medical check entails before getting it done! |
