Protesting the Free Trade Agreement. My friend took a riot police sword to the stomach when she got off near the subway and the fighting began. A cop noticed she was not a part of the protest afterwards and she was fine.
Not many of my pictures turned out well. I watched the thing until it broke up at City Hall about an hour and a half ago. Pretty amazing experience.
The news reports put the numbers at 25,000. I think that is a bit off. A crap ton of cops though, I got caught in a maze of the police busses. Got a couple of pictures with the riot police. Even got to rubber sword duel one until his boss reprimanded him.
I understand the protestors, small farmers are somewhat screwed. This is one of those experiences though that makes me glad I got to another culture. Granted this protest was similar to the one in Seatle... new to me.

I spent all day in Insadong. I saw a small anti-FTA protest at the 'entrance' to Insadong (near Tapgol Park and Nakwon Arcade).
Then I heard the helicopter flying around and sirens all day....but had no idea what it was all about. Didn't see a thing. Pretty strange... |

We accidentally stumbled upon this march whilst visiting from Pusan; in the distance we saw smoke that might have been tear gas, but I didn't think it was that rowdy. Easily 300,000 people parading. |

Looks like some sort of cookout and a big waste of taxpayers' money. Helicopters. |

Sorry, but I have no sympathy for farmers who insist on using 19th-century agricultural techniques in the 20th century. What are a few small farmers compared to the rest of the population, who have to pay an artificially high price for rice (not to mention other foodstuffs) because of state protection?
Funny thing is, Koreans always like to paint the worst-case scenario. I remember when the government freed up foreign exchange in the country, and many who were against it warned of dollars being pulled out of the country. Instead, what happened was that dollars flooded INTO Korea as many investors felt comfy knowing that they could pull their dough out. |

farming in korea is not agriculture..it's 'arts & crafs' and priced accordingly
$3 for a 'japenese apple-pear'? $1 for an apple? |

Isn't there a Kim's Club that needs round-the-clock police protection somewhere? |

I would've just cranked the film speed. It wouldn't be safe to have a camera set up on a tripod in that kind of setting. Although it would make a handy weapon in a pinch. |
