Yeah, I`m gonna use a Manny line for the new requirements. Seriously, is working in South Korea that important that people are sweating these requirements. I guess maybe I`m lucky because I soon won`t have to deal with them or anything Korean again. But really, you are in a country that considers you a 2nd class citizen. Doesn`t matter if you are an apologist or a hater, you are never an equal in their eyes. The people also despise the fact that they have to learn Englishee, which explains why they are so poor at it. All appearance and no substance. They hate the fact that they can`t get their own people to do the job and they hate the fact that you make more money than they do.
Are you here for that 7 million a month? Hey, good for you...if your life is defined by money I guess you must consider yourself successful. But the bottom line is that you are doing it in Korea. Not France, not Italy...you have to live in Korea to do it.
If you are a newbie to Korea, then I can understand the need for money and all. However, anyone that has been in Korea for 5 years or longer should A)be debt free B)have investments back home and C) a decent amount of money in the bank. So, who really cares about working ESL jobs anyway? Do you stress out because you won`t be able to work in lovely Korea with the sparkling people and dynamic architecture? As one of my ex-colleagues noted, "Driving a truck is more professional than working in South Korea

Wishmaster gets his wish of not living in South Korea. I don't know of any foreign teacher making 7 million Won a month. If you are making 3 million, then you're pretty good at what you do, assuming you are legally working. Korea is only different than Europe in that it's doesn't have music, art, and illicit drugs in the streets and that it is acquiring new wealth through it's manufacturing industries. Really, it's not the place to be if you want to get stoned while walking the stoney mountain trails. I didn't come to get stoned, but it would be nice to blow a doob on a mountain trail.
I think a lot of foreigners don't enjoy Korea, because they want to get stoned and want more shopping options while not understand how to go places and do things on the weekends, but those self disciplined enough can enjoy the good qualities of Korea while putting aside those other things in life we would like to enjoy.
Getting paid is king, anyone would be unhappy in a situation of not getting paid if you are with a bad employer and not liking Korea for that reason. If you are getting paid, then take initiative to make happiness for yourself while you go without all those pleasant things easily found in other countries. |

And I guess the rest of us are lucky since we won't have to deal with your whining again...but I don't think that kind of good luck ever happens.
See you back here in six months...what's this, your second or third farewell thread? |

Can you elaborate more on that? I am legally teaching, but only taking home 1.7 after deductions from my 2.0 salary? How do you make more without doing illegal privates? I know if I were teaching 28 hours a week public school, I would be making about 2.5 to 2.8 a month, but hagwons only pay 2.0 for 30 teaching hours a week. I have seen many university jobs that only pay 1.7 to 2.0 a month. I understand CDI, Wall Street, and English Channel adult hagwons will pay about 3 a month for teaching 40 to 50 hours a week which would be too difficult. |

Most I ever made was 4.5 in a month, but that was a one-off deal.
I really don't understand where these claims of 5, 6, 7 million come from. If you're only doing privates, 7 days a week, paying your own (cheap) accom, I suppose it may be possible. But Surely its extraordinarily difficult to arrange 8 or 9 hours of privates per day, that do not overlap and with barely any travel time between them?
Anyhow, presumably due to the exxagerated boasts of people on esl forums, investigative reporters for korean tv documentaries sure have spread the news that all foreigners make 5M a month. Seems to be what the korean public believes. |

Dang, I thought the Korean public knew that most of us are pulling 1.7 m take home pay per month. I know they know or think they know how much I make since they don't ask how much money I make, while it is customary in Korea to ask how much money you make though I don't ask anyone.
I sure hope people don't think I am that dang filthy rich; 5 million Won a month. Wow, that's 3X more than in reality. |

Do you really think that the Korea public believes that the 3D workers or American soldiers (who make up the majority of foreigners) all make 5M a month? |

I agree. If you're working for less than 4.5 you're being underpaid. So remind me again how we do it, just so we're on the same page. . . ? |

How do you do it? With difficulties. People with an F-visa...much easier. Just get a couple of company gigs at 75-100k an hour and you're golden. |

I am here because of my husband, who is Korean. I have my complaints about Korea, but by and large, living here isn't all bad. |
