Hairdresser is sued for refusing a job to woman in a headscarf
By Martin Bentham and Anna Davis, Evening Standard
The owner of an "alternative" London hair salon is being sued for religious discrimination after refusing to give a job to a Muslim woman who wanted to wear a headscarf at work.
Sarah Desrosiers, whose Wedge salon specialises in "urban funky" cuts, says she turned down applicant Bushra Noah because she was "selling image" and needed her staff to display their hairstyles to the public.
Ms Noah, 19, is claiming religious discrimination and suing Ms Desrosiers for more than 15,000 for injury to her feelings, as well as an unspecified sum for lost earnings.
"I sell image - it's very important - and I would expect a hair stylist to display her hair because I need people to be drawn in off the street," said Ms Desrosiers. "It's the nature and style of my salon that brings people in and someone having their hair covered conflicts with that. If someone came in wearing a baseball hat or a cowboy hat I'd tell them to take it off while they're working. To me, it's absolutely basic that people should be able to see the stylist's hair."

Despite the fact that, as the salon owner states, the stylist is an advert for the store, and needs to show off her 'funky' hairstyle, what kind of 'funky' hair salon is going to employ someone who looks like she works in a library. |

Desrosier is a very strong argument for mandatory chadors (Is that the kind that covers a woman from head to toe and hides her face?) Her make-up makes her a public eye-sore. If she's going to be sued, it should be for crimes against good taste. |

Strikes me more like the western sense of entitlement being exercised via a frivolous lawsuit than anything. I hope it gets tossed out. |

Hi - it reeks of trolling, yes they are looking for a fight. They picked a good place too. "Alternative" - we cut hair for punk rock/all night clubbing girls. Fish net stockings, short skirts with large rips in them... everything that offends the pious Muslim lifestyle. After that, theres more trouble to be made
with hostile work environment for this woman.
Places like this are full of anti-racist tolerant Marxist Liberals. The Muzzies are starting to eat their "friends".
bnp.org.uk - come over to the dark side. |

Bushra looks like a dude with lipstick (forget the Mach 3, she looks like she needs a daily Brazilian wax on her mug). Maybe if she had good hair, she would have been hired. Since we'll never see it, we can never know.
Unfortunately, she uses her silly religion to attempt to not only look absurd in her daily life, but to also take advantage of her host country by starting what is a clearly frivolous lawsuit.
Nicely done, Bushra. Love the smirk in the photo, too. |

This assumes that an employer has an obligation to hire someone. Dead wrong. An employer can choose for any reason. They just can't always make that reason public. |

Yes, this is what puzzles me. The shopowner clearly doesn't know much about safe practices in hiriing.
Is she justified in not hiring the woman for the reasons stated? Absolutely. Is she smart? Not very.
What was required, after recovering from her initial shock and completing the interview, was "Well thank you for coming in to talk to me. I'm still interviewing through next week. When I make a decision I'll let you know." Followed by the standard note/phone call of regret. |

I agree this lawsuit is frivolous, but these kinds of suits serve a good purpose. When a law is passed, it doesn't--and can't--cover all situations. Suits like this give the courts the chance to spell out the fine details of what does and does not constitute discrimination. It's like the First Amendment in the US guaranteeing freedom of religion. Just what exactly does that mean? The courts have been working for two centuries to define it. |

Not according to gender, age, race and religious 'discrimination' laws they can't. |

Well, well, it looks like yet another case being made for clamping the lid shut on Muslim immigration to Europe. Sure doesn't take these so-called traditional Muslims long to exploit a judicial system that would never be tolerated back home in their own societies. It would be funny if it wasn't so galling.

Nice apologetics there; what this case really indicates is the death of COMMON SENSE in the West, or at least in much of Europe. This case should never come to trial but of course the hand wringing leftists will nurture this one for all its worth.
I hope the shop owner fights this tooth and nail.

What I always notice in cases like these is a conspicuous absence of hand wringing leftists but instead a bunch of right wing ranters are all over it deploring alleged activity of non-existent leftists. Seemingly you have no sense of irony. |

You could have put the period two words earlier and been just as correct. |
