I was curious if people in the greater Hyehwa area would be interested in meeting up for drinks and food on November 30th, a Friday. There's a hof called, I believe, 코초, that gives a ton of side dishes and isn't too much. Afterwards, we could head over to the cat bar or wherever else we deign to go. Anyone interested? |

The hippie bar near the university with cats lounging about. Although, truth be told, the cats are a bit scarce compared to last year. Nice little place with cheap booze and an owner that speaks English. |

You mean real cats? If so, I certainly hope it's a smoke-free bar. |

In Korea?! Right.
Last time I was there, a guy was holding a cat up by its front legs, laughing while it meowed loudly. |

Woah - which university? How do I find this place?
My top 3 bars in Hyewha:
1) Time of the Gypsies (amazing record collection - lots of psych/folk fun)
2) Basquiat
3) Hakrim (not a bar, but damn it's good) |

Yes, Koreans love cats and treat them better than their own children by providing a smoke-free environment. |

Er, I forget the name. Always get it mixed up with Sookmyun but it's the big one. Down the road from Burger King, perpendicular to the main road. That's where the university is. The bar's location is a bit hard to describe. Almost to the university on the main street, two alleys pass the arcade, on the left, down an alley about 5m, on the right. I think that's it. Has a bunch of metal sculptures of steer heads out front.
Don't know Time of the Gypsies. Where's that?
Kinda surprised about Basquiat. I've heard a Korean jazz band there that really impressed me but other than that it seems like an overpriced normal bar.
I mainly go between the cat bar (미술관) and Comfort Zone. Woodstock is supposed to be good too, but the one time I went, it was closed. Sam Cooke's alright as are the two 8 bars, as long as you don't mind blaring music. |

The university is Seongkyunkwan, or 성균관. I may be down for this. |

That's it, I live next to that Uni. Sounds good, I'm hunting for that bar asap.
Basquiat is definitely overpriced, but sometimes the vibe is really fun in there, with random musical happenings and whatnot. Plus it's a good room. Time of the Gypsies is: walking FROM BK, past Basquiat about 20 paces, on your right, sort of down an extremely short alley. The sign just says something like "world music" and it's in the basement. Ultra good tunes, great barkeep, cheap beer (+ tons of other drinks).
This is good news, I've been needing some new places to check out in the neighbourhood.
Have you had the Turkish Kebobs next to the SKK uni entrance? Get the beef - they're awesome. |
