first of all, i really just want a tutorial but can't find one

second, i tried to download a radio program on my mp3 player (gasp! not an ipod!!) and while it does show up as a device, when i go to click the download link, quicktime opens up and wants to play the program

i found the imusic (or something?) and scrolled around there but only found a subscribe to podcasts so i subscribed hoping i could drag the file over to my mp3 player; sh*t no out of luck

so how do i download stuff for my player?? i actually had to unplug my new mac and plug in my old nb to download stuff - i don't want to do that!

**and** what's really getting me is i can't seem to get the 'right click' option to work properly on the mouse - that is, i do understand if i was using windows and a quicktime player started playing a file i only wanted to download - i could right click and just copy the link and get to it that way - but no dice, right click does nothing despite following the directions (whatever they were, i'm in a pc bong right now sorry)

please help!!

are there websites out there for macs? i had to get this one for film school so i'm going to have to adapt to it rather quickly...

whoever responds thank you !!

This is just a guess, but if the file opens in quicktime you should be able to choose, under the quicktime file menu equivalent, "save as".

http://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa This is the best source of info for apple users. Their own tech support people are required to read these boards daily.

www.macrumors.com -- discussions here pretty good as well

9to5mac.com also a very good site for information, the best for news and apple insider info

What Os are you using? And exactly whatkind of file is it? If qt is opening it may be a video file or some strange audio format.

If you are using Tiger or Leopard:

The file should be downloadable just like any other file. You can download it to your desktop and drag it into your players software or you can download it into itunes and play it from there. If it is web radio you can stream these programs in iTunes.

If it is simply right clicking that you are after, try control-clicking that is the mac equivilent of right clicking. If you are using a two button mouse or a newer mac mighty mouse you can enab,e right clicking in sys prefs/keyboard and mouse.

Demaratus,

thank you so much for the info! i don't quite get the reason behind all the nonsensical responses around here these days Shocked

anyway, i found the place where i could set the options to always save to disk - it wasn't a weird file - just an mp3 radio program i listen to regularly - www.democracynow.org - you might like it - they have several ways to play it again - it's actually tv and radio so you can see it also - but i download it and listen to it on my player (not an ipod by the way)

i had more problems yesterday - the screen went haywire and i had to reload the os - you mentioned "Tiger" and yes, it said that on the os disk but checking now it just says Mac os 10.4.11; no mention now of the tiger - it was just there when the disk started up.

i did find the apple discussions forum but only one person responded and their answer didn't work and that was it; i found the entire sign up process incredibly tedious - ! in fact i'm finding learning this mac very tedious - every bit as tedious as learning a windows machine - i thought macs were supposed to be user-friendly??

i did manage to edit some photos earlier - but still - working my way around the os is a bit difficult - i'm quite the novice at the mac - i really would like a tutorial to follow - i just don't get why there isn't one available.

you aren't in seoul by any chance are you? and interested in showing me the ropes for an hour or two? i'm very tech-savvy- have been using computers for over 2 decades; just new to the mac, and i have to use it a grad program i've started (which i dont care to mention anything more about at this time)

thanks again -

Do you really derive that much pleasure out of telling people how much Macs suck?

/Glances at your avatar.

I guess so.

I wish I could garner up so much hate for an operating system. Oh wait, no I don't.

Actually I merely mock the supposed superiority and invulnerability of Macs. I don't hate them, I'm sure they're fine computers. I mock the Cult of Mac and if you don't like it, then buy a PC or a box with linux.

Moosehead, the way iLife programs work (iPhoto, iTunes, etc.) are that the files you see in the app are just facades of their real-life counterparts. To get at your files, you need to access them through the finder. For example to get to a song you've downloaded and added to your iTunes library, click on the Finder, then Music (in the left column) then iTunes, then iTunes Music.

I don't know if this will help you, but when I switched to Macs I thought of the Finder as the Windows Start button. Once you click that, the window that opens allows you access to everything in your computer.

If you have any more specific questions, there are plenty of Mac users here that will be glad to help. Good luck!

Oh, and in response to your original question, to download the podcast,

1. Click on the listen/watch entire podcast link. ( I assume you got that far Smile )
2. Ctrl-Click on the Download hour one - 28M mp3.
3. In the window that pops up, click on Save Link As.
4. A box will pop up showing you the name of the file, as well as where you'd like to save it. Saving to your desktop is fine for this.
5. When you plug in your mp3 player, it should mount on your desktop like any external hard drive.
6. Drag the file from your desktop into the music folder of your mp3 player.

I'm confused...is the OP using iTunes or not? If not, maybe you should. It's free and works well for what I do (listen to radio show podcasts.)

I can just drag files/episodes from the iTunes window onto the MP3 player icon in the Finder with no problems.

Are you trying to do something else?

I can also download the podcasts to my MP3 player from My Yahoo! by ctrl-clicking and choosing save/download. Any 2/3 button mouse should allow you to set the right button to act as ctrl-click.
