No it's not. Let's look at it this way.

Is it the same for a Chinese person to walk into a restaurant in Korea and trying to speak English the for them to walk into a restaurant in Australia trying to speak Korean? No it isn't.

Why?

English is used as the international language.

I have a Taiwanese friend who has voiced their displeasure at the general inability of the locals to speak English. However, I know she doesn't feel the same way about them not understanding Chinese. And, I doubt she would find it annoying if someone in Australia doesn't speak Korean.

It's so patronising this 'English is used as the international language.'

For business, traveling (maybe) and science perhaps, but we CAN NOT EXPECT everyday people from other countries to know English or care about using it in their daily lives.!

How handy for Westerners, yet how expensive, time consuming and inconvenient for everyday people from other nations!

Talk about cultural imperialism!!!!

Come off your high horse with this nonsense. Why should a Korean hairdresser / dry cleaner / waitress etc - study english just to accomodate some English teacher who can't speak the local language!!!???

What a load of dross!

Mon Dieu! Years ago the lingua franca was Spanish and then for several years French. Peter the great the Russian Tsar insisted that everyone speak French in court and dress the same. Same in early America, once they developed a "upper class" it was imperative that you speak french lest you be one of the unwashed masses.

Cultural imperialism? Yeah probably but cupcake it isn't anything new. Save your outrage for important stuff. Jade

Man, another self important, patronising poster. Just stick to the topic at hand and leave the personal comments aside.

What is up with Dave's...?

Yeah like anyone meant that.

Oversimplifying, patronising idiots. Yes idiots, you might be okay in real life but your online personas (most people in this thread) are idiots.

Gee I wonder why they have issues with the foreigners in Korea. They should change their food to suit us. Change their language to suit us. Change the way they look to suit us. Basically change everything to suit us. You think they don't know how many people teach in Korea and can't stand it or them but, just want the money and then run. They should respect you for that?

Congratulations, you just won today's official Dave's ESL award for the absolute worst analogy. You should be proud.

Why? because it's so simple? just look at some of the posts. Kiwiliz says that because she was brought to Korea to teach English only, that she feels that they should speak English. Others complain about the food and how it could/should be better. Others on how ugly or rude the people in Korea are etc. but, everyone who is teaching English etc. is in THEIR house. You don't get it?

The reason your post it utter crap is because it is not even relevant in how people behave here. I know you're a noob and all, but Dave's is a place where people come to vent. They complain about the food, and whatever else because they DON'T do it to the actual people. Nobody walks around telling Korean people their food is terrible and they are ugly. If you don't get it, maybe you should wait a while before you respond.

Therefore speaking English is as international as annything else here. Second English IS a school subject. Its not like saying "Do you speak Serb?"

I don't think anyone in Hong Kong or India speaks English as a first language. They are second language speakers

There are many millions of first-language English speakers in India. Have you ever been?

Really I thought they learnt Hindi or whatever the native tongue is of that place/community and English in schools. then again I was happily typing letters into the computer irrespective of facts. I know that Cantonese is always the first language in HK tho

Sorry, but you're a bit off base about Hong Kong....there are plenty of people in HK who are fluently bilingual in Chinese and English. HK has a lot of international schools that Chinese kids can go to...they become just as fluent as a native speaker. They also have the (English Schools Foundation), which is a school system this is basically just like public schools in the West. All of the schools are English...set up by the British in the 60's.

Often, I'd be on the subway and hear a group of middle schoolers switch flawlessly between Cantonese and English. However, you are right in that the majority of Hong Konger's speak Cantonese as their first language.

Sorry, but I doubt everyone on Dave's acts the same way in real life. Some probably do (some I know do) openly criticise Korea to Koreans, some don't.

Quit with the simplifying and 'your post is utter crap comments' and you might come accross with an ounce of credibility.

Of course there are always exceptions to everything, use your head. Even if I said, people don't walk around killing people, of course there are exceptions, but you get the point. Don't you?

The original analogy was utter crap, and I already have more credibility than you will ever have.

Obviously you can't read. where in my post do I say they say it to their faces. And actually that's even worse but, YOU being the noob, don't find anything wrong with talking about other people when YOU visit THEIR country. That's why i'm here, just to vent, as you yourself say about people here at Dave's.

WOW Shocked Truly shocking.

Did you read your first post? Let me cut out some of the main sentences.

Quote:
they could eat your food and then tell you how bad it is and what you should do to make it better?

look at pictures on the wall of their family members or friends and tell them how ugly they are

In both of these sentences, you mention saying it to them.

Next, please point out where I talk poorly about Koreans in this thread? All I have said to counter your ridiculous post was that there is nothing wrong with someone coming on here to complain about things about living in Korea (something you know nothing about because you haven't been here) to other foreigners that are experiencing the same things. I would bet that the majority of these people live happy, enjoyable lives on a day to day basis, but when things build up they come on here to vent.

I guess I shouldn't have called you a noob, because it appears you are still about 6 months away from even being a noob.

Also, please tell us what you are here to vent about? It seems more like you come here to find something to complain about.

Umm...let's see, you said,
(something you know nothing about because you haven't been here)
Actually married to a Korean woman for 6 years, been together for almost 9, been to Korea 4 times, have a baby boy, family still lives in Korea, been to Itewan once for about 10 minutes, couldn't stand it because of all the shit attitudes of foreigner's there. What exactly are your stats? Again read why don't you read... your said...
( because they DON'T do it to the actual people ) you don't seem to disagree with this, this is why I said you. You picked out my post why? because of the bad analogy? I don't think so...why not just move on and read the other posts? probably because you are the kind of person i'm talking about. The point, the point, the point is this is not your freaking house.

I'll be the first to admit I am wrong here. Didn't know that. I myself have been here for going on 4 years now.

I still stand that the analogy was terrible. I still don't even really see how it is relevant, except to counter Pyongshin Sangja's ridiculous post.

You say I am the kind of person you are talking about. What kind of person am I?

My point in this thread is well established. It never had anything to do with people in Korea not having to learn Korean. I do think people living here should learn Korean. The thread is about whether or not someone expecting English is the same as Korean. It isn't.

I still don't see what's wrong with people coming onto a site aimed towards us and complaining. What would you rather people do?
