| This is one of the best days of my life. I woke up at 7am this morning just to watch this game. Only those of you from Saskatchewan really know what this is like. Unbelievable. |

What an amazing Grey Cup. It was a bit funny having all this island of energy and CFL pride going on in downtown T.O. surrounded by the dour dullness that is the GTA, but it was a beacon of life in an otherwise soulless city (well, most of the time anyway).
Toronto put on a decent street festival before the game, with some free concerts along with other various events. In front of the CBC building there was a stage, lots of bratwurst (2 brats on a bun for $3--it's amazing they didn't overcharge) and lots and lots of Coors Light and Canadian in cans. Everyone was pretty much toast before the game started, but included lots of good feelings and ribbing even between bitter rivals. The alcohol combined with team pride didn't make people stupid, at least not in a violent way.
I was impressed with all the fans from teams that didn't make it who came out and showed their colours. The creative outfits worn by CFLers of all stripes were impressive--a lot of effort went into them.
In the Rogers Centre Roughrider fans were everywhere and outnumbered Bomber fans about 5 to 1. When the Bombers were on offense the noise level was pretty close to what BC place had a week ago. Lenny Kravitz played well at halftime though he didn't try to connect with the audience. He was there and gone with just a few words to say. His three song set included "American Woman" and "Are You Gonna go My Way?" Apparently the Rogers Centre didn't understand how much westerners (or any football fans for that matter) like to drink so the lineups for beer in the building were nuts.
Although the game wasn't a classic offensively it had some great defensive plays and was exciting and in doubt until the end. Needless to say there was lots of celebrating after the game from jubilant Rider fans including myself.
A few shots from Sunday:
Sloan performing at the street fest
CBC reporter interviewing some blind mice in front of the CBC building
Biggest barbeque in the world? Keep those brats coming!
3 port-a-potties for hundreds of fans. Go figure. At least they are in BC colours.
Opening ceremonies
Gainer the Gopher leading the military (flash went off)
The winners celebrate and Rider fans everywhere go nuts
Riders win! |

Nice pics! I am in Vancouver still (waiting to leave for Seoul) and am still recovering from the party I was at. I was goin for the Riders and am glad they won but the Bombers showed a lot of guts. i think they would have won with Glenn.
on a side note if BC hadn't choked they would have killed the BB. |

If you go to Melville and look at the team pictures from back in the day, you will definitely find a few relatives of mine. Look for the sizable ears and very full lower lip. |

| The consensus is they should have blown out Winnipeg but choked a bit. But they still won. And Rider fans are a class act -- no trouble or BS just have fun and party. |

For the record books:
The Riders have never won a Grey Cup under an NDP government. |

Nothing new here, but it's worth giving the thread a bump.
------
Two guys from Saskatchewan die and wake up in hell. The next day the devil stops in to check on them and sees them dressed in parkas, mittens and toques warming themselves around the fire. The devil asks them,"What are you doing? Isn't it hot enough for you?" The two guys reply, "Well, you know, we're from Canada, the land of snow and ice and cold. We're just happyfor a chance to warm up a little bit, eh?" The devil decides that these twoaren't miserable enough and turns up the heat. The next morning he stops in again and there they are, still dressed inparkas, toques and mittens. The devil asks them again, "It's awfully hot down here, can't you guys feel it?" Again the two guys reply, "Well, like we told ya yesterday, we're from Canada, the land of snow and ice and cold. We're just happy for a chance to warm up a little bit, eh?" This gets the devil a little steamed up and he decides to fix these two guys. He cranks the heat up as high as it will go.The people are wailing and screaming everywhere. He stops by the room with the two guys from Canada and finds them in light jackets and bucket hats, grilling bacon and drinking beer. The devil is astonished,"Everyone down here is in abject misery, and you two seem to be enjoying yourselves."The two Canadians reply, "Well, ya know, we don't get too much warm weather up there in Regina so we've just got to have a cook-out when the weather's THIS nice." The devil is absolutely furious, he can hardly see straight. Finally he comes up with the answer. The two guys love the heat because they have been cold all their lives. The devil decides to turn all the heat off in hell. The next morning, the temperature is below zero, icicles are hanging everywhere; people are shivering so bad that they are unable to do anything but wail, moan, and gnash their teeth. The devil smiles and heads for the room with the two Canadians. He gets there and finds them back in their parkas, toques, and mittens.NOW they are jumping up and down, cheering, yelling and screaming like mad men!!! The devil is dumbfounded, "I don't understand, when I turn up the heat you're happy. Now it's freezing cold and you're still happy. What is up with you two???" The guys from Saskatchewan look at the devil in surprise,"Well, don't you know, eh?. If hell freezes over, it must mean the Roughriders have won the Grey Cup." |

*bump*
This just in: coach Kent Austin, who coached the Riders to a Cup in his first ever year as a head coach, is leaving to become an off. coordinator for his old college, Ole Miss. Austin was a QB there in his college days & is in the school's athletic hall of fame.
Grumblings from the denizens of Riderville(typical Sask., where fear, loathing and envy reign supreme)are calling him a turncoat. I say: horsehockey!
1) He will make at least as much dough there as in Regina
2) He's goin' home-he's been in Canada for 20 yrs.
3) As QB & coach he's led the Riders to 2 Cups
Disappointing? Sure but I say power to Kent and good luck w/Ole Miss! |

Yes, football fans from Canuckistan, they've done it again. Those demonstrators of disaster, leaders of losing, instigators of ineptitude are actually going to another Grey Cup game(Calgary). Three Cup wins in a century-in a league that has rarely had more than 10 teams. Ouch! Eat your heart out, Chicago Cubs!
Under coach Ken "Grandpa" Miller(no Woody Hayes-this guy's idea of excitement is eating an "After Eight" mint at 7:45-no wonder he ended up in Regina), the Riders earned a home field berth in the W. Final & beat the Stamps(Smilin' Hank ain't be smilin' much this Mon. morn). North Carolina product D. Durant(QB) developed nicely the last 2 seasons & led the offense.
Of course, the Riders are HUGE underdogs against the Montreal Alouettes. QB A. Calvillo is arguably the league's best QB of the last 15 yrs. There's nary a weakness on the Al's off., def. or special teams.
On Sunday, I'll give ya all a quarter by quarter updated score. |

I'm not from there but was living in Regina in 2007 and 2008.
The fans are top notch! After watching that Grey Cup at a friend's house, we all walked over to Albert Street and joined in the celebration. Great memories. I'm a Hamilton fan first but I'll never cheer against Saskatchewan.
Go Riders! |
