My area has been taken over by election fever, starting yesterday. Most of the volunteers are supporting Lee Myung Bak.

Last night I had a conversation with a Korean friend. We talked a bit about the election. She asked me if I were Korean, who would I vote for? I said Lee, b/c even though he's a crooked SOB, he's smart and will do well economically.

She agreed, then she said something that shocked me a little. She said he's a crook b/c he's smart, and that all smart people are crooks. She basically justified his con schemes. I laughed and said 'It sets a bad example. Become a great con artist, don't go to jail, but instead become president'. She seemed to not understand the irony of the situation.

If my friend's attitude is in any way representative of Korean people in general, Lee's gonna win this one.

Personally, I'm looking forward to the spate of whining posts about the campaign trucks that park around town (ALL towns) and blare out music and ranting speeches. I like the lines of volunteers with banners across their chest bowing and smiling like machines at street corners.

Campaign time is a good time.

I've been here for a couple of the non-presidential elections and the trucks are annoying. Last night there was one down the street blaring music and my wife said that campaign season had started.

It would be interesting to talk to a Korean (other then my wife) about the election, but most of the ones I've brought it up with don't care.

Korean Christians are a rare breed. Let's hope it stays that way.

Anyone notice how most of the K-Candidates think they're mini-Hitler/Mussolini's? I love all the shouting/gesticulating they do during their speeches. Feels like I'm walking past a Nazi rally on my way to dinner.

Oh, and 7am today there was a truck in the big Sinchon intersection blaring some female candidate's voice. I was already up for school, but I would have been pisssssed if I was trying to sleep.

My lady is big on that guy who was a supreme court justice.

Not sure who he is, but she seems to trust him the most, and thinks he is well-qualified for the job.

Anyone know much about him? We haven't talked about it much, and I'd like to hear some other opinions just so I have something new to say to her about the guy.

I haven't heard or seen anything yet, but I expected to see a barrage of loud speaker trucks. Nothing out of the ordinary, yet. Just that damned egg truck going, "Sah Oh!, Yongidong...blah blah blah," at 8:30 AM 7 days a week; holidays too. He has been my alarm clock for 11 months now.

Today my MOL noticed that someone had burned holes in the poster of Lee Hoi Chang (eyes). So she did the same to Jung Dong Young, saying she hated that 'chon nom'.

This election is a lot about reputation and fame. Apparently, Moon Guk Hyeon (an independent) is good, and people like him, but he has no support. So he can't win. He might be #4.

My wife mentioned one of the many reasons why she didn't like Jung Dong Young is that he's from Jeolla-do. She doesn't want someone from Jeolla running this country.
