IMO Daejon is one of the nicer cities in S. Korea. Centrally located, nice national park just outside the city. The northern part of the city is better than the rest. |

Before you agree to work anywhere in Daejeon, may I suggest that you inquire if that outfit supports Daejeon's hagweon association's banner program? If they do, tell them you refuse to work for scum. |

The Daejeon Hogwan Association put banners on their vehicles telling foreigners "They are being watched" and offering a reward to anyone who turns in a foreigner for teaching private lessons. The banners also painted foreigners as child molesters. |

I'm sure they'll get far with that...
Parents can't get enough of foreign teachers. I love how some nut jobs think they can change things, when in reality, there are waaay too few teachers, waaaay too many job vacancies, and nothing can beat down an ajuma's desire for her child to go to Seoul University. I bet if all foreigner teachers were declared child molesters, many parents would still let them teach their children English, just with the parents supervising. Nothing can deter the laser focus of an ajuma. |

IMO "nice" is just euphemism for "dead boring". |

I once went to Daejeon by mistake. The only words I can think of to describe it are 'thoroughly unimpressive'. I spent about an hour walking around the city centre thinking, this is all that 1.4 million people can come up with? |

Oh, and it's sister-cities with Calgary. Does that tell you anything? |

I lived in Daejeon 8 years and was very happy there. There aren't as many things to do as in Seoul, but there is enough to keep you entertained if you know where to go.
I am stuck in the a*s*s*hole of Korea (wonju) now where there is absolutley nothing. I would move back to Daejeon in a second if I could find a decent job there again. |

Hi,
It's a nice city......come to live here. The subway is good!
Do be careful of the whole hagwon thing though and do your dirt digging on any perspective employer..

Daejeon sucks. No redeeming features whatsoever. |

Daejeon has its pros and cons like any city...its a lot less congested than most major cities, its relatively clean and there are good night spots to hit up every weekend, and then added bonus is its only 55 minutes outside of Seoul...
the whole foreigner thing has died down from what i've seen...not a single banner in the past 3 months...but thats maybe just my part of town...the subway is awesome...there is also a good foreigner community...
the drawbacks is that it can be dead at times, and the night life can get repetitive, hence the benefits of seoul...if you're into teaching privates as well then there aren't a whole lot of options here...but try working legally and you'll be fine
its a really simple city to get around in...because of its close proximity to seoul and the decent night life here, i'd say you'd be happy as long as you're not planning on going out partying everyday of the week.... |

Does anyone remember the thread from a couple of years ago where some guy spent a 3-day vacation in Japan and started his thread to fill us in on Japanese society? It reminds me of this thread. |

I agree with you about the night life, but I found lots of privates in and around daejeon. Of course, I was married to a korean at the time and my wife helped me find them. Now, I'm not sure whether I could do as well on my own or not. |
