What's the difference between makgeolli (막걸리) and dongdongju (동동주)?

Besides the price, I mean.

Well, they're different...I'm not sure about the distillation process, but I know dong-dong-ju isn't available in bottles, only on-premises. It's also more delicious.

Good question. I was asking myself the same thing just the other day.

I think the main difference is that makgeolli is bottled in factories while dong-dong-ju is made in small batches by individuals. I think dong-dong-ju has a higher alcohol content.

As far as taste goes, to me, they're about the same. However, whenever I drink them both back-to-back, I always start with makgeolli, so maybe that dulls my taste buds Smile

Not true. I bought a big plastic bottle of it yesterday at Homever. It cost a whopping 200 won more than the makgeolli. Paying 1,200 won for 1.2 litres of alcohol really broke my wallet.

7.5%, as opposed to 6% for makgeolli.

Is dongdongju filtered and makgeoli unfiltered maybe? That is, you have to shake makgeoli first, to get all the stuff at the bottom to swirl around, but you don't have to with dongdongju?

Just a guess....

In another thread, Butlerian said that dongdongju comes from the top of the pot, makgeoli from the bottom -- sounds good to me...cream and milk, how do they differ....

Nope, dongdongju is unfiltered. Totally settles. Filtered d-d-j does exist--it's transparent--but I don't like it as much.

I've heard this too and it sounds plausible.

I had to shake up my bottle of dong-dong-ju. The milky stuff had settled to the bottom, and the top part was clear.
