What are a few questions asked during a Univesity Job interview?
And.....
Do Universities really expect a potential new teacher to take a day off (or play sick) from their current job in order to attend an interview? All the job interviews I've been asked to attend have been scheduled for times which are impossible for me to commit to. Whats the scoop here? Is it a test to see how loyal you are to your employer or is it to see how badly you want that new job?

Well that depends on the university - but some include
- What is your teaching philosophy be prepared to talk about teaching theory and explain why you choose activities.
- Why are you quitting you present position I don't want to work at a hogwon is not a good answer
- Why should we hire you?
- When can you teach a demo lesson? usual length of about 20 minutes though I once did a full 45 minute lesson. You may be teaching students or you may be teaching other teachers/staff so they can observe you
- How long do you plan to stay in Korea?
- Are you interested in professional development? What are you doing to improve yourself as a teacher?
There are of course many more possible questions. Most importantly go into the interview with a professional demeanor and dress. I am leaving my current school and have talked with the coordinators about the prospective teachers - many have been dismissed because of poor attitudes in the interview or poor dress. If you can not put in the effort to look professional in an interview you obviously are not prepared to teach in an university.

If you explain your position most universities will reschedule with you. I know of one university that won't reschedule and I suspect that they lose some good potential teachers because of that ridiculous policy. My current university will schedule on Saturdays for teachers who can not make it on a weekday. |

Not just universities. This is the rule for job interviews, anywhere. Korean hogwons who hire teachers that can't manage this - and apparently there are lots of them - are an anomaly in the education world.

I disagree with this, to some extent. While it's best to stay positive and talk about new opportunities, growth, etc... It think it's also important in an interview to be honest. Interviews are certainly performances, and you want to put forward the best version of you you've got. But I think interviewers have reasonably well-tuned big-fat-phony radars. |

You should also be thinking about questions YOU should ask at the job interview! Ask about housing (dorm? On campus? Off campus?). LOOK at the housing before accepting!!! And retention. How long have most of the teachers been at that uni? (The longer the better!)
Try to talk with some teachers who are already there (WITHOUT officials present!) to see what they think. |

Are you a native speaker?
Do you have at least a 2-year degree?
Will you fulfill a 1 year contract? |

Do you have a 4 year BA or BSc? Can we see your transcripts? We want to contact your uni to confirm that this degree was actually conferred to you.
Why did you come to Korea?
Why do you want to work for our university?
Do you teach privates?
Which female TA do you think is the cutest?
What are some of your strengths and weaknesses?
Which textbooks do you enjoy working with the most?
Are you willing to write curriculum for our uni?
Also, ask many questions.
