Perhaps someone can enlighten me.

http://www.g4f.go.kr/pt/InfoDetailR_en.pt?bbscttTitle=What+is+Visa%3F&categoryId=2&parentId=380&catSeq=385&showMenuId=367&fromOrgPath=&toOrgPath=&userId=&resorceCont=info+boards+%3E+Immigration

I am currently on an E2 visa and I work at a university. My visa is up at the end of February. Would life be much easier if my university assisted me in applying for and E1 visa? It seems to me that for university "Profs" this would be an easier route to take.

Any useful comments?

TCD.

I am quite sure that you need a masters to get an E-1. I currently am a "professor" right now and am on an E-2. A coworker who does the same job as me is on an E-1 with a masters, but he is in the process of getting his PHD.

In my opinon you should begin preparing to get a medical checkup and criminal records check.

I've been preparing for my medical check-up since i've arrived here in Korea. My pants have been pulled down and I've been coughing since I got off the plane. Laughing

If you teach credit courses at a university (not sure about the non-credit folks or de hak folks) and have at least an MA, you are eligible for an E-1... The question is whether you university will sponsor you for one.... One of my coworkers brought it up here, but the uni doesn't want to go that route despite the fact that most of us have MAs...

Many universities also require that both your BA and MA be in English if you are teaching English on an E-1 visa.

seems to be how immigration interprets the paperwork the university prepares for you. Half the people at my job have E-1s and the other E-2s. But according to the admin, we should all have E-2s, those with the E-1s were "mistakenly" given them. Great excuse!

Basically, there are no clear guidelines for this (imagine that...and here in Korea, no guidelines???). My school is willing to switch us over to E-1s now that this proposed E-2 reg mess has surfaced, but they are not sure immigration will switch us since we've been at the university for so long on E-2s.

We all have MAs, mostly in TESL.

Would be nice if they would be more clear on these things.

people at my univ today were talking about the same thing, it sure would be nice to have it changed. If you teach credit courses then it seems logical to do that (but when was Korea was ever logical?)

not sure what the % of people at my school have MAs in TESOL etc but a majority of us have MAs in something. My last univ I had an E1 for some reason

I'm a professor at my uni.

When they call me professor, I ask them, "Hey, do you want to know what I profess?"

They ask, "What?"

I say, "I profess that I am an English lecturer!"

so you DON'T need a masters to get an E-1? Even having a masters won't get you an E-1? which is it?
