I get weirded out by everyone calling each other Hyeong, Nuna, Obba, Eonni, and so on.

Like...a woman will call a young waitress older sister, but if a man says nuna, they think he is gay.

I hear the students call each other that all of the time.

Even one of my friends called Nicole Kidman her older sister because she likes her.

Any thoughts? |

Its standard for a korean girlfriend to call her Korean boyfriend oppa. my g/f does from time to time and I'm cool with it. Now if she started calling me 'APPA' I'd start to get concerned.

In regards to the OP, I can't see much of a problem. Its part of the language and just a form of the confucian heirachy syatem. The only problem i have is sometimes if I'm speaking Korean I goet my ohnis and nunas mixed up. Thats a bit embarresing. |

Dude, this is one of the greatest things about Korea. If a woman starts calling you oppa, then she has accepted you into her life, as a friend, lover whatever the relationship is. Go with it. |

I've got no problem with it in a non romantic but close relationship. I think of it as similar to saying,"I love him like a brother".

It's when a guy I'm dating tells me to call him "Oh-ppa" that it feels odd. Unlike maxxx_power I don't like to keep it in the family.

But maybe the girl feels silly if she thinks she looks older than Beaver, which is a distinct possibility. |

I do look younger (you and I both, katydid, have babyface genes) but with her it's a cultural thing. |

yeah, but you know, oppah = older brother. Weatherman is right...girls call all guys they are close to oppah...unless what you mean is she feels weird bestowing the term to a waygoogin? |

Then what is her context for relating to you as 'the' boyfriend? Do you ever use Korean in conversation? Are you using Korean cultural norms when dating? I really wouldn't stand for this. |
