Yeah, I suck. I fucked up.
I planned on getting her an English name necklace.
Went to several jewelery stores today and it takes a week to order
and get in. Unfortunately, Sunday is the day....

So I figure I'll save that one for Christmas.

Now I have no ideas now.

Guys and Girls if you can give me ideas, I would be much obliged.
She's in her early 20's, works as a nurse, is not religious and is fairly open-minded (but doesn't know much about things non-Korean.)

I have a terrible time buying presents...

Does she have a MP3 of some sort?
-A new cellphone?
-Take her out to a fancy dinner and movie, give her some really nice fancy flowers as a hello.
-Find a spa or something similar and give here a day at the spa to relax after dealing with patients.
-Take her to Jeju or something this weekend as a special trip just for the two of you.

hmm

only been together just over a month

so:

trip to Jeju-nah
she has a nice mp3 player and cellphone.
spa idea is cool...I'll ask another Korean friend of mine if she knows somewhere good (or do you know one that's good?)
I was planning on making her dinner and giving her flowers also...the flowers are still on but she wants us to make Korean food together.

I'm just trying to avoid resorting to a lame body shop gift basket...

Get her something she can use that will remind her of you. I got my girl a pair of gloves from Banana Republic. On top of that, I got her some make-up remover scrub from FRESH. The f-er was like 60,000won just for some fancy soap. Either way, it made her happy.

Get her a nice scarf, gloves, or bracelet. Girls here LOVE Tiffany's so head over to Lotte Department store in Seoul City hall, inside is a small Tiffany's jewelry store. Get her some silver earrings or something.

However, that ties into my Gift-Giving Principle #1. When in doubt, give something that you hate but they love.

Some of the worst gifts I've received are just projections of what that person wants me to be, like the double CD set of Blind Willie Johnson just because I said I liked one track.

I know I can avoid that mistake, and show the person that I really value who they are, when I choose something that I have absolutely no use for. When I choose something we both love, I'm always afraid that I'm buying it for my own sake.

The store is a bit of an adventure in sensory overload, agreed. You almost have to dash in, pick a couple of products and bring them home before you can appreciate them.

OP's been with the girl for a month, so yeah, a trip to Jeju might seem excessive. But actually, in my book, and it's a fair-sized book, a personalised name-necklace... boy, that's an even more dangerous/overly enthusiastic/looking-to-get-hitched option than some plane tickets & hotel reservation.

Question: How dare this chick have a birthday so soon into the fling?

LUSH? LUSH, okay. LUSH Korea? Yeah, knock yourself out paying 2x the price you'd pay in the West, and even MORE than you'd pay if you were lucky enough to live in Japan where average incomes are 47 times higher than what the grubby locals here make. Koreans love being financially butt-raped -- that's the only explanation for LUSH Korea. (Their soaps are amazing, every chick on my Xmas list is getting 'em.)

I didn't know Lush is so popular in Korea. The store always gives me a headache when I walk buy it. The one thing I once considered getting was this soothing shave cream for sensitive skin.. it was in one of those black icecream containers, cost $12 or something for a tiny container that would last a couple weeks, which I thought was a ripoff.

Korean girls aren't into Face Shop as much anymore? Face Shop is marketed as high-end product here.. it's a tiny little boutique and the prices are 3x those in Korea. Weird.
