Never understood the allure of doing drugs in a country which has rampant police corruption and very strict drug laws. The idea that you would do something in a "vacation" country that you wouldn't do at home seems pretty screwed up to me. I always wonder how north Americans and Europeans would feel if boat loads of Asian and Latin American tourists flooded into their countries for the sole purposes of doing drugs and prostitutes against the laws of the land. I know I wouldn't like it.
But to each their own. Last time I was in Bangkok you could actually go and talk with inmates from your own country, some guy on Khao San was organizing tours. A lot of backpackers were doing these things in Cambodia too, it seemed like such a lawless place because there were people smoking and eating herb all over the place, but I am sure people get caught or extorted by the police fairly often. |

| You could say that there are asian gangs selling drugs (I know the vietnamese gangs are a big problem in Calgary and Vancouver) and maybe some latin gangs and smuggling, but tourists coming to Canada for drugs and hookers? Sure.... |

I wouldn't see any problem with foreigners sitting on a beach, in a bar, or on a room rental property smoking herb and being peaceful, because they are patronizing local businesses and bringing money into the local economy.
It is a problem if you have thieves, fights, litter bugs, chemical waste dumpers, strung out meth addicts, and corrupt police forcing bribes.
My only questions is: How much risk is there of a police officer forcing a bribe on you when you were not doing anything illegal? Does this sort of corruption occur? |

| Props for hijacking the thread. I love how I can always count on Canadians making everything about 'them'. |

thai police don't care much about pot smokers. the most you'll really get is a fine if you're caught smoking a bit of weed. what they really care about are the people who traffic the drugs to and from thailand. get busted doing something like that and you're done, but you'd have to be a complete moron to try something like that anyway.
as for the major touristy areas, many of these places have agreements with the police to have a "hands-off" approach. i know that in koh phi phi, police completely avoid the reggae bar - where hundreds of patrons routinely smoke in plain view of everyone. perhaps this is due to some bribe/business arrangement. |

Really.
Do you have experience of this?
Have you been caught?
I was led to believe by the main teaching in Thailand forum that recently had a member locked up for three months that things are a bit more serious than that.
