|
|
I'm going to start by saying that I haven't played any proper computer/video games since about 2000. I played a text based online roleplaying game extensively after that (http://www.threshold-rpg.com) but didn't play 'real' games since then.
However it seems that the games I loved before then have died in their franchises or their companies have gone bust. Anyway here's a few games that should be brought back (and if anything similar has come out recently then please tell me so I can check it out ^^ )
(1) X-Wing/Tie Fighter
These games were OUTSTANDING. X-Wing was freakin awesome, but then Tie Fighter somehow managed to blow it away. I think it was the chance of being evil and a slightly more detailed plot that trumped X-Wing but this was the best game that involved vehicles I've ever played. GTA 3 on the playstation or whatever it was whenever it got good was my second favorite vehicle game.
(2) Syndicate (and I'll kinda chuck in Cannonfodder)
Cannonfodder was the idiots pussies comedian version of Syndicate and it came out years later. Syndicate was one of the awesomest games ever. I guess modern RTS games are related.. but.. they don't have the same FEEL do they? Syndicate was freakin awesome. I can barely get over how good that game was now. The followup game ('Syndicate Conspiracy'? maybe?) was OK but I got stuck on a stupi level with stupid monorails which pissed me off no end.
(3) Civilization II
Civilization was awesome. Then I played Civ II.. oh my god. I have probably spent more hours on this game than any other, EVER. It rocked so much. When Call of Power came out I was pretty excited... it was sucky in comparison. COPII was worse. I'm not sure whether I played the 'real' CivIII.. probably not. Was it any good? Has any strategy game EVER approached the brilliance of Civ II? I'd name Colonization (the one about colonizing N.America) as my 2nd favorite strategy game ever. It was like a mini civ-2.
(4) Transarctica
Well I don't really rate this too high but I'll chuck it in because I liked its crazy plot and it was fun to play. It's about trains in a crazy ice-age future where everything gets shipped by train. It's about '94. I guess it's kinda old.
(5) Populous 2
Populous 2 was way better than the first one, and one of the most perfect games I've ever played. This is a franchise that needs to be brought back. Freakin awesome game. Black and White had NOTHING on it.
(6) Sim City
OK I know there are recent versions of this, but I think the two best versions I ever played were the SNES (Super Famicom) version and the gameboy version. Simcity 2000 was also very good. I never checked out the later ones.. were they as lame as they sounded in the reviews?
(7) System Shock
System Shock is the only game that ever really freaked me out. That computer voice freakin upset me. I still hate that stupid AI tryin to kill us...bitch..
I bought SS2 but my computer wouldn't play it for some reason.. upset me for weeks. So I never played that game. I was secretly glad because I figured that no game could ever be anywhere near as good as SS1 though. Maybe I should check it out now though.. And has anything similar ever been released? (apart from Deus Ex) And I mean similar in terms of plot and style, not in being a 3d shooter..
( *A New[ish] Game!!!* Deus Ex
This is probably the best 3d shooter game I ever played. I liked it because of the plot and the upgrades and stuff. I read reviews of Deus Ex2 and it read like they dropped half of the character building and development and made it a faster paced regular 3d shooter thing. So I didn't bother to check it out.
(Oh yeah, I also thought Half Life was decent when I played it, I had fun with that)
Anyway, any other games that should come back, the way they were, but better? |

I would love to see FFIV-VII remade into FFXII style graphics. I know that currently FFIV and VI are works in progress for the Nintendo DS, but the screen shots I've seen are a drastic improvement, but not up to the maximum potential I expected. |

Syndicate was the game where all the people followed you around and started killing everything.
Monkey Islands were great as well.
As were ALL of the Sierra Adventure games.
I saw that there is a new sherlock holmes game out and I will be getting that for my PC. I love classic adventure games style adventures. Point and clicks. |

I remember enjoying Jetpac for the Spectrum in the late 80's.
The first game that really impressed me was Castle Wolfenstein 3D on the PC. I'd love to see that now! It seemed such an immersive environment back then. |

You guys have similar tastes as myself. Sydicate and Populous - even Transarctica I remember enjoying because of travelling around the world and trading stuff.
I loved all of the Lucasarts adventures - great, mind-testing games when I was a young teenager. Much more educational and better at promoting lateral thinking than games these days. The Monkey Islands were a favourite, but the best of all in my opinion was Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders. Brilliant humour and quite an open game to play.
Elite II would have been fantastic if I could actually get anywhere in the game. Amazing how they fitted all that universe on one floppy disk. As a soccer fan, I loved playing Sensible Soccer with my friends - the sequel, Sensible World of Soccer, was truly amazing and comprehensive. I think Cannon Fodder was made by the same people, which can be seen in the graphics and fun style of play.
Going back even further, the Kings Quest series was fun and the freedom it gave players to do what they wanted was impressive at the time. The Police Quests and Leisure Suit Larrys were not quite as good. Lemmings has to go down as a very good puzzle game - especially in two-player mode using two mice. The Settlers, a resource-management strategy game, is one of my favourite games of all time but it seems that this wasn't popular in North America for some reason. I could go on...but I'll take a breather here |

Manhunter as well. |

I was a huge fan of Sierra Adventure Games. King's Quest was my favorite, I also played Police Quest and Space Quest - great games and pretty difficult too. Quest for Glory was another one I absolutely loved - they made 5 of them and then stopped.
I agree with the poster about Final Fantasy VII - possibly the greatest RPG ever made - they should remake it on the PS3. Xenogears should also be remade.
There was a game on the Gamecube called Eternal Darkness --- I wish they would make more.
Phantasy Star I and II on the Sega -- great games that took FOREVER to beat - but remaking them would be awesome. |

I've played most of the games the OP listed, and must agree with most of the choices. I've also logged countless hours on Civ2, and reveled in the "3d glory" of tie fighter. (Get Alpha Centauri if you haven't - the only true sequel to Civ2)
FYI, system shock 2 was also supposed to be really good; I've been keeping my eye out for an old copy floating around. A new game in kind of the same vein is Bioshock, which is also supposed to be REALLY good.
I'll definitely second the monkey island games. Number 4 was especially awesome in my opinion. King's Quest/Space Quest were always a good time...
The one I'd really like to see is Privateer. Probably my favorite game of all time. Yeah, they did Freelancer not long ago, and it was good, but the depth wasn't quite there. |

Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Some of the versions aren't so good, the versions that focus on the whole Tribe vs. the individual are prett good. |
