That was always excellent for some late night reason that made it all the more funnier. |

I have to take issue with people recommending 'The Catherine Tate Show', 'The League of Gentlemen', and particularly 'Saxondale'. All absolute toss. But comedy is subjective i suppose.
Peep Show is a great, great show though. Most can be found on google video. |
I agree (though have a soft spot for league of gentlemen)
what really annoys me is when americans say things like 'oh yeah i love british comedy; 'coupling' is a great show' |
See also - 'Two Pints of Lager', an absolute abomination of a sitcom. |

The Catherine Tate Show didn't do it for me.
League of Gentlemen is a masterpiece.
Jam is....well, Jam. Nothing else like it.
Saxondale has good moments. Not a classic but not a duffer either.
Top Gear is good for a laugh. Clarkson has become a parody of himself.
I've watched only one episode of Peep Show. It seems good but nothing groundbreaking.
The Royle Family was groundbreaking and total genius. Watch the special. The Queen of Sheba.
Ideal, with Johnny Vegas had a curious appeal.
The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer, and, Bang, Bang, it's Reeves and Mortimer, are essential viewing. They basically shaped modern British comedy.
Black Books is fantastic.
Father Ted, more Irish than British, but very, very very, funny.
Lots more but it would take all day. |

| Well, yes humour like books, music, etc is subjective so let's recommend things and the OP can decide for themselves if they like it or not. |

I've always been a big fan of "Monty Python" and "Black Adder", same goes with "Father Ted", but some of the stuff that I really enjoy watching doesn't seem to be noticed too much.
I'm a huge fan of the show "Chef!", staring Lenny Henry. Brilliantly funny (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108723/).
Ditto for a show called "Some mother's do 'ave 'em", staring a pre-Phantom of the Opera Michael Crawford. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069634 )
I was also a huge fan of "Spitting Image", although I do admit that it is not for everyone (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086807/)
I could potentially go on for hours, but I'll leave it at three....I highly recommend both "Chef!" and "Some mother's do 'ave 'em", and recommend "Spitting Image" if you like your comedy different.

I've just watched all of "Black Books" and I loved it. I've seen a fair bit of British television, but I'm wondering if I've missed anything that's worth watching. "Little Britain" was hilarious too. I've seen "The Office" and "Extras" and the old stuff like "The Young Ones" and Ben Hill's stuff.
So, Brits or anglophiles, point me in the right direction. I was only beginning to watch the stuff on tvlinks before it was taken down. |

I've always enjoyed British TV, especially the comedy - but I had a fascination with Dennis Potter mini-series when I was at uni. Loved his stuff.
Especially, Pennies from Heaven, The Singing Detective, and Lipstick on Your Collar.
Michael Winterbottom had some great drama series too, particularly Family. Just brilliant TV. |

One of my favorite stand-up performances. He's a highly annoyed man. |

How about something old? Here are some of the old programmes I can recall off tghe top of my head - regardless of quality. Sorry if these have been mentioned already.
Rumpole of the Bailey
The Fall and Rise or Reginald Perrin
Filthy, Rich & Catflap
Grange Hill
The Comic Strip series of films
Porridge
Open All Hours
Minder
Spitting Image
Not the Nine O'Clock News
Brush Strokes
Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em
It Ain't Half Hot, Mum
Never the Twain
Are You Being Served?
The Thin Blue Line
The Good Life
The various Adrian Mole series
And for something not classed as comedy, here's one of my favourites - a programme that was aired on cable TV here in Japan in early 2007: The Professionals. |

Three that are unmissable, simply unmissable...
Fawlty Towers. Possibly the best thing ever to have been on telly anywhere at any time ever.
Some Mothers do 'ave em. Slapstick but just painfully laugh out loud funny.
Only fools 'n Horses. Del Boy has to be the best loved and most loveable character ever to appear on British tv. And the writing is superb. |

I started feeling a bit sentimental reading through that list. Adrian Mole was great. Sue Townsend recently wrote a book about moley all grown up, i dl'd it from demonoid and it's well worth a read/listen if you can get it. She hasn't lost her touch with that character. |

Phoenix Nights
Had me in stitches, Peter Kay is a genius.
Max and Paddy, was a spin off, but just as funny. |
