Hi,

Will I have any problems with using a wireless router, which will have to cross 3.5 metres (to the next room) with an internal concrete wall in the middle.

My wife contacted our provider, as the wired modem we have is leased, and asked could they supply us with a wireless one. They said something about the concrete walls being a problem. I think this is rubbish, but am I correct?

If it has to go through a lot of concrete without any breaks it could be a problem.

a solid concrete wall, yes ... if there's a window or door then you should be ok.

It's not the concrete, it's the re-bar in the concrete that causes the problems.

If there is a break in the wall, door or window, you should be fine. If there is not, then run a cable (cat5).

Thanks.

It is a solid wall between the living room and the bedroom where the internet connection is.

Baby sleeps there a lot of the time you want to use the PC, so I want to move it out of the bedroom.

Could somebody suggest the easiest way to go about getting 8-10m of cat 5 cable?
Is it standard stuff carried by emart/homeplus etc..

Yup, just walk into the computer section and buy the length you need. 10 meters should be no problem. Cable runs of up to 30 meters are acceptable with cat5 ethernet cable.

It will probably be labeled as network or ethernet cable. It will be the same stuff that runs from your router to your network card in your desktop.

The general rule with wifi is that the denser the material seperating the base station from you, the crappier the signal. Concrete and large metal objects are the worst.

I think with one wall, you would be OK.
