I'm at a hagwon that is supposed to have a duo of a foreign teacher and a Korean English teacher. The job seems fine, except that the school can't seem to retain their Korean teacher!
One stayed on for two months, then mutually decided to part ways with the school after they had an issue with her smoking. Also, she would grade students' work incorrectly and of course the Korean parents were on the phone to the school constantly.
Immediately after that we had a teacher who was really passionate about the job and looked like she was a keeper, but she was unfortunately involved in an auto accident and her condition doesn't allow her to teach in the near future.
Another replacement was found, and she managed to stay on for two days. Her mother called in for her to say that she had a stomachache (she's 29). Hmm.
Just today I find out that her replacement won't be coming back for a second day.
Anyone else having a problem like this one? Do Korean teachers tend to quit at the first sign of trouble? |

Corporal's right, the Korean teachers don't have much incentive to stay. Would you do this job for half the pay, and no free apartment if you had any other option?
After one Korean teacher quit at my previous school (she'd only been with the school for a month herself), we had a different Korean teacher every day for a week. They'd show up, work one day, then quit. Except for one, whose English was so piss poor she got fired the same day she was hired. |

99.9% of the hokwons screw over korean teachers. But then again, that's the fault of the korean teachers because they let the school screw them over and they won't stand up to the owner. It's a korean thing it seems. KT's are expected to be the obedient slave and don't question what I say employee. Just be on time, teach many classes, work 6 days a week and accept the low pay or if you don't like it, leave because some other fool is waiting to take your job. KT's do a lot of work at hokwons it seems; calling parents, running interference, cleaning, in addition to teaching what, 8/9/10 classes a day! Why they let themselves be used is beyond reason. If they all ban together and stick it to the hokwon owners, it would get better for them! Hell, everyday thousands of koreans are protesting throughout the country! This is one protesting country! Why not protest instead for a positive change KT's!? You don't need the hokwon owner; they need you! Think smarter not harder! Unless you like getting used, abused, screwed and tattoed! |
