Just wondering how many of you have copied posts or ideas that have helped you write term and research papers.
If you have, or are contemplating doing so, here's some etiquette:
1. Ask for permission from the author of the text.
2. Send them a PM or e-mail asking permission to quote them or use their idea.
3. Source the text in your paper. There are many professionals and people that do research that use this board that they could easily remember something that had been written here or on any board.
Albeit, Dave's is a good place to get ideas, don't shoot yourself in the foot.

Exactly. I don't see a lot worth plagiarizing. People here keep their best shit to themselves. |

There are some useful threads on this board.
If you're writing a term paper or even a narrative article or story under the auspisces(sp?) of the ESL industry, this board can help give info or even expand the horizons of what has already been written in your paper.
My advice, if it's not your original idea - give credit where credit is due.

could you point us in the direction of a thread that you would be able to use in a paper and the context in which you would use it? |

There are plenty of anecdotes of classroom experiences in the Job Discussion forum that I'd gladly use in a report on student-teacher interaction, EFL, classroom dynamics, cross-cultural education, school management, curriculum studies.. but I'm done my Masters so my essay days are over. Just saying, there's a lot there that's useful, in under the "my students stink" threads.
I once did my entire final report for an MEd course on the Schoolhouse Rock social studies cartoon series. And for a Middle East class 10 years ago, I asked some Israelis on IRC their opinions on things, and was able to quote them thus: "Some people in Israel think that..." A+.
I'll use anything. |

There are numerous school reports on the veracity review that have been copied and pasted from here.
All (as far as I know) reports that were mentioned on the hogwan veracity database are cited with a link back to the original thread. |

I'll use anything. |
Precisely what I'm saying. Why not start a thread about a particular topic you are researching.
I've seen topics like: Teaching 'A' & 'The', etc.

I've always been under the impression that unless what you write is general knowledge, most profs want you to credit your source. |

Speaking as someone who has done a lot of academic research, permission for quoting information on this board is unecessary, provided it is not quoted in large chunks. When you write things in a public forum such as this, you are releasing your words into the public domain and can be quoted without permission, provided that you are given credit for it in the paper.
Having said that, I agree with the initial replies that there really isn't anything worth quoting here. Sounds like a dead issue. So how did this come up? Is the OP writing a paper on foreigners' perceptions of the promiscuity of Korean chicks? |
