Bingo... I freakin' hate it when reporters essentially ask evolutionary biologists to make wild, unfounded speculations about how or why certain human traits came to be, then write down the answers as if they were Revealed Truths.
One of the scientists quoted said "I can only speculate, but..." Hey reporters: that is your cue to STOP WRITING. A scientist's speculation about what might have happened umpteen million years ago is no better than anyone else's.
I'm an atheist and a lover of science, but this kind of thing is not science by any stretch of the imagination. Evolutionary psychologists have to be really careful to avoid spinning what the late S. J. Gould referred to as "just-so stories". |
