i plan on learning a lot more of the language than i know now and im contemplating taking courses somewhere.

ive seen that some places offer free courses, but i have no idea the quality of them.

im not sure if theres a point in taking lessons if i already have a number of people at work who can help me pick it up.

anyone taken lessons?

Hey,
My roomate and I and a friend had a man tutoring us. We were paying 15000 for two one hour lessons a week. This went well for a bit, but then after about a month we broke it off. The one girl was looking to learn for fluency and my roomate and I were just looking for conversational Korean, so it was becoming hard for the tutor to meet the needs of both groups. My boss has offered to find someone else, but right now time spare time is a pretty precious commodity, so we're just taking a break. Hope that helps.

oh yeah, are you still in Waterloo? That's where I was living before I moved to Korea in September. Small world...

I've taken free lessons in Seoul. The place is pretty well run and it's great if you want to learn to read and write hangul. The day to day terms aren't taught (at least at the 1st level - there are four) but you can pick those up easily enough living here.

You will have Korean co-workers willing to help you can't count on them to sit down and teach you Korean. I ask mine questions from time to time but they don't sit and give me lessons.

If you want additional information on the place I've gone (or am going) you can PM me.

there is a "STICKY" thread on this located in one of the other Korean Discussion Forums... Try General Forum and look near the top of the list.

Here are some other threads that discuss learning Korean. I think you might find the last two particularly useful.

Learning Korean

1. To Study Korean - where's the best?
2. Sogang Korean Course for Waygookin
3. Chosun University Korean Class
4. Korean Language Classes?
5. Does Jeju National Uni have Korean Classes for Foreigners?
6. Learning the Korean Language
7. Korean Language Resources

There's a centre called KECC near Apkujang. I enrolled for a month in November but I am about to drop out - too difficult too quickly. Even the Japanese are struggling and some are taking the course for the second time.

I did learn some stuff I wouldn't have managed on my own - but the teacher, though sincere is not good enough make a good job of the task.
