SKorea boxing champion in coma after fight: report
South Korean boxer Choi Yo-Sam fell into a coma Tuesday after successfully defending his World Boxing Organisation intercontinental flyweight title, a report said.
Choi, 33, fell unconscious after challenger Heri Amol of Indonesia threw a right to his jaw seconds before the fight ended, Yonhap news agency said.
Choi underwent brain surgery but was still in a coma late Tuesday, it said.
The Korean fighter collapsed five seconds before the end of the 12th round after Amal had landed a punishing series of right and left hooks to his face.
Choi managed to stand as he was declared the winner but fell into a coma immediately afterwards, the news agency said.
"We never expected this to happen. As soon as Choi Yo-Sam recovers, the boxing committee will discuss safety measures," said an official of the Korean Boxing Commission, quoted by Yonhap.
South Korean boxer Kim Duk-Koo slipped into a coma and died from injuries sustained during a match against US champion Ray Mancini in Las Vegas in 1982. His death led to reforms in boxing, including the end of 15-round bouts and health checks before and after fights. |

Granted, I don't know much about boxing, but it seems to me the other guy should have won.
Happy Boxing Day to my Commonwealth friends~! |

I saw this fight yesterday at the Gwangjin Convention Centre. At the time everyone stood up and rushed towards the ring but the announcer told everyone that the injuries weren't serious! It was a strange spectacle to see the winner leave on a stretcher while the loser posed in the ring for photographs relatively unscathed. |

It's a screwed-up situation if the winner goes into a coma and the loser walks out uninjured.

I saw the fight and I have to say that the Korean edged it in my opinion. He went down after the fight had finished. The Indonesian went down twice during the fight too. (although on one of those occasions he appeared to slip) |

Expect more restrictions to E2 Visa rules because of this. |

Interesting how they almost made it sound as if it was wrong that the guy punched him seconds before the fight ended.
Sad thing, though. Hope he comes out OK. |

I'm not a boxing fan (actually, I despise the sport) but I believe that the scoring rules for bouts were changed not so long ago. Each round, the judges determine how many points each contestant has earned in that round. So, it's quite likely that, barring a KO/TKO in the last round, the less injured person could still be the losing contestant. Point are awarded for technical ability among other things and deducted for fouls. |
