I Installed Vista Ultimate 64bit today. Everything went really smooth, haven't installed my printer yet, but since it comes with a Vista CD I am not worried. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the manufacturer for my 3 year old web cam had vista drivers that work.

I love the gadgets - got two clocks installed, two memos, a calendar and a cpu 4 core monitor installed. I like the black look as a big change away from XP blue which was getting a little stale.

Haven't looked at aero yet; actually don't even know where the settings for that are. One thing I quickly took care of was turning off that annoying pop up everytime you installed a program or even ran winrar.

It took me a couple of minutes to get used to the new "my computer" interface and navigation to find files, but I like it much better than XP. The other thing I like is that windows update is built right into the control panel so no more launching a browser to get there (not important really, but I like it).

It does look like I lost my network to my laptop and other desktop so no file sharing for now. But I'm sure that with a little poking around I'll have everything networked together in WORKGROUP.

Any advice for a Vista newbie? Any apps, utilities or tweaks that you feel are necessary? Or even better a recommend site to read on tweaking vista to run better.

quad core and 4gbs of ram makes VISTA sweet for sure...

I'm not sure what you mean by settings for aero. Aero should be running automatically. It's the default GUI. You can turn Aero off or lessen its effects, but with the power of your new 'puter you don't need to.

The gadgets are cool. And constantly evolving as users make new ones. I'm using the 2-core cpu and ram meter, a calender and the currency converter.

I haven't really tweaked my Vista. I think Vista is pretty well optimized. There doesn't seem like there's much the user can do. It defrags the drives automatically unless you turn that off. I think mine does it every Wednesday night.

I did try Dreamscene and thought it was pretty cool. But soon got tired of my desktop moving all the time, so I turned it off.

I'm sure there are lots of tweak-vista sites out there. Like I said, my Vista Ultimate runs very nicely so I haven't bothered to mess with it.

What about games?

From what I have read, there doesn't seem to be many installation issues even with relatively old titles, but my main concern is the 32 bit performance in a 64 bit environment.

I read a recent review that illustrated that the differences are almost nil across the board for titles now that drivers have matured. Is this the case?

I want to move to Vista 64 bit myself, but this is the one area I don't want a major compromise.

To all who may search back for my many my anti-Vista posts...that was before I looked into 64 bit computing and there is no way I will walk down the half-paved path of XP 64. So there. Laughing

This list helped me review some programs, though, in typical Wiki fashion, many people who contributed didn't stick to the rule of stating 32 or 64 bit compatibility.

I think I am pretty much Vista ready now anyways. New printer (HP C7280), O/Ced the shy E6550 to 3.0, installed the monster Zalman, pumped up the 3850 and got some better airflow in the box. Let's see what tomorrow brings.

You're going to have to pay for 8.5 if you want compatibility with Vista. Money is better spent on XP SP2 IMO.

Ok, I admit that I am not techno savvy, so please tell me what the difference is between 32 and 64 bit?

I don't believe that XP 64 is supported. I should have read the OP better. I was thinking you Vista.

Dood, go back to XP Pro SP2. Vista 64 has some serious bugs and it's not compatible with a bunch of stuff. Seriously, go back while you still can and MAYBE upgrade to Vista when they release SP1. There is a reason why most corporations and colleges, etc don't yet support Vista.
