If you're aware of any competent therapist or psychiatrist that speak fairly fluent English outside of Seoul, please let me know. Thanks.

I'm honestly stunned that the list is so small! A little sad I think, any explanation for it?

Well, the list was once even smaller than it is today (believe it or not). Again, if you know any other counselors, let me know and we'll put them on for you.

You might want to ask a psychiatrist or a pharmacist.

The question I've had these days is whether or not having attended counseling would keep you from getting a job teaching in South Korea?

It seems that if you have ever taken any medication for depression/whatever , and admitted it on their form when trying to obtain an E-2, you're immediately denied?

Getting counseling is one question and I don't think there would be any problem with someone receiving "talk therapy". (Remember, a therapist cannot administer meds unless they are a psychiatrist with an M.D.)

Medication is a totally separate issue. I *personally* would recommend that if a person is on any kind of medication and is relatively stable and all, not to bother mentioning it on any work form. The reason being is that many Koreans are VERY ignorant when it comes to issues surrounding medication. They basically see it as leprossy, or something even worse. It's a personal matter and if it's not affecting one's professional life, then it is none of their business.

Unfortunately, many Koreans tend to have a very bizarre understanding (or should I say missunderstanding) of medication. Mental health is very much a growing edge for Korea and have seen many people become abused by the ignorance. Just my opinion.

BTW, the above is only a reflection of my opinion about Korea. Luckily more and more confidentiality is being honored in the medical/psychiatric community here, in that it's not written up as much on an employee's in-house records, these days.

Thanks for your reply. I do appreciate your concern and I believe it is sincere.

As an inter-faith pastoral counselor, I have an M.Div. along with residency courses in both pastoral counseling ed. and clinical pastoral ed. I guess the sad reality that there are people working as counselors with even less qualifications than I have.

Concerning personal and professional opinions, I've had doctors tell me that they discouraged drinking professionally, yet personally they recommended that I drink some red wine to help boost the HDL Cholesterol (the good kind). Also, counselors might say that something is their own personal opinion.

Also, I never mentioned Immigration once. I was referring in the context of whether to tell a Hagwon boss or school administrator. I guess Immigration is another problem and granted, you make a good point.

The crux of the problem for me is that I've had a few clients in the past (who shall nameless) who were fired or not renewed because their public school boss found out that they were taking mild anti-depressants. It seemed to have really little to do with their work history or stability and more to do with the fact that they're taking anti-depressants. Granted, certain professions, it is important. I just think that a hogwan boss making an ignorant decision based on fear is not helpful. I would rather side with the teacher in this case.

I want to clarify: if a teacher is unbalanced and unstable, then they are most likely better off not coming to Korea.

Thanks for your response. I look forward to hearing your opinion and discussion (along with others).

All the best!

I think doctors are split over the importance of 1 glass of wine a day. My grandfather who has a heart condition was told to do just this, as well as taking a low dose aspirin to help relieve the stress on his heart (in addition to his heart medication). That being said, I disagree that his personal and professional opinion are separate. I guess we will have to agree to disagree on that point.

Well, maybe I misunderstood then, but you quoted the below poster. It appears to me that he is eluding to the securing of an E-2 visa which in my opinion points towards immigration. Thus I assumed your opinion to lie was in response to this.

I agree that those are unfortunate incidents, but in my opinion the decision to withhold information from your employer should be talked about on a case by case basis (and with your clients) and not thrown as a blanket on a message board.

Thanks for your reply.

Excuse-me. You are correct that the guy asked about immi. I have an F-2 and haven't had to deal with the clowns for many years and was oblivious to the new rules. Sorry about that.

About the wine. My doctor told me that professionally, I must tell you to avoid it; personally I would recommend a glass of red wine a day. That's basically what he told me.

About the Meds. A few teachers were "wrongfully dissmissed" (IMHO) because they dissclosed their med history to their school. Based on the stupidity of the school's decision (from what I could gather from the teacher), I stated my "opinion" earlier in this thread as a way to combat stupidity.

You are probably right that case by case would be more helpful and your concerns are heard. My only point is if they're going to dissmiss someone based on them taking certain meds, that to me is silly. I would think they would be better off dissmissing some people who are not on meds and really should be, or those who are not stable.

I would also like to add that alchohol is a medication and many teachers abuse it and in Korea it seems so "normal". What's with that?!
