I saw this film yesterday and enjoyed it, despite the fact that people around me were constantly flipping open their cell phones and making other distracting noises and gestures.
1) The running time given at the theater was 2 hours, 36 minutes. I read a U.S.-based review stating that the official running time was 2 hours and 40 minutes. In the same review, I read there was a scene with a man on fire and Lucas shoots him to put him out of his misery. I don't remember that scene at all but the movie was long...so maybe I glossed over it somehow. If not, what else did I miss in those four clipped minutes?
2) After the wedding-day roadblock by Josh Brolin's character, Lucas throws the fur coat his wife gave him into the fireplace. Why does he burn the coat?
Thanks for filling me in... |

I bought the bootleg DVD in Seoul, so didn't see it in the theaters and don't know if/why it was cut. The scene with the guy on fire is the first one, before the title card comes on. It lasts about a minute. |

2) He burns the fur coat because it was this ostentatious/show offy garment that caused him to first attract the attention of the police. If he hadn't have been wearing it, but something more boring or normal, he never would have been noticed, but would have blended into the crowd at the boxing match.

I think he burns the coat because the coat gave him a high profile which caused him some problems, if you remember. Remember when he says "The loudest one in the room is the weakest" to his brother? At least that's my interpretation. |

Thanks for all the replies. I was leaning toward the "anti-flashy" explanation. I was surprised when he and his wife stepped out in their fur outfits at the boxing match because he'd been dressing in a pretty understated way up to that point.
I got tripped up because the roadblock scene went by so quickly and I heard the Brolin character say something like "Don't forget your coat." I thought maybe Lucas was disgusted that Brolin touched his coat and wanted to burn it. Anyway, thanks for your viewpoints.
I walked into the theater as "Produced by" was flashing on the screen. I guess I totally missed the man on fire scene. |

Yeah, the burning man scene was at the very beginning.
I think in the wedding road-block scene, the cop also said something like "Man walks around in a $50,000 coat and doesn't even buy me a cup of coffee--something wrong with that"...Frank knows from then on that the cops know who he is...Hence the burning of the coat in his house as he's pis@ed he got made...Should have followed his own advice...But I guess it didn't really help when every celebrity and even the boxers were getting introduced to him at ringside...It was only a matter of time I guess... |
