I need a reference point.
I have been offered an employment opportunity teaching English, proof reading documents and providing electronic technical support.
They have offered me 3,000,000 won per month for a 40 hour week.
There is no medical, pension, bonus or accommodation.
I think I would only get public holidays off as well.
I need to counter offer but I need to back it up some how, can anyone help me out with some salary figures of a similar position.
What does a 35 year old Korean Man/Women graduate with 10+ work experience year get per month for a salary?
Personally I think there offer is on the light side what are your thoughts or comments. |

With pension, medical, bonus (as in year end severance) and accommodation, teachers are paid 2m to 2.2m.
Housing in Korea is difficult because of the need for key money but if you are not in Seoul, then it's cheaper. For example, in Daejeon, you can get a studio that is 12 pyeong for around 400K a month with one month deposit.
Without medical, if you go see a doc, you pay the raw sum, which could be anything from 10K (likely more) and up, versus 3,000 won per visit.
I would personally never take a job that doesn't offer pension, medical insurance, and accommodation. I can live without the bonus if they are paying me enough to begin with.
Also, you cannot compare yourself with Koreans because if they are professional teachers in the school system, they get paid a lot more than us. Those in a hagwon... well, some get paid less with fewer benefits, some get more.. depends.
You can only go by the market price, which is the standard 2 to 2.2/3 ... |

Maybe you should accept the 3,000,000 won but ask for a raise after three months, by some "salary review" meeting at the end of these three months. |

40 CONTACT hours? Man, that means burn-out. The salary better be at least 4 mil plus health, pension and the whole shebang. You better find out exactly how you are supposed to spend that 40 hours. |

After looking through the job description I will be carrying out the following tasks.
1. Teaching two Business Classes to 100+ people each morning and afternoon
2. Accessing the English ability of each of the class attendees
3. Making custom English language programs for the attendees of the class
4. Proof reading and writing company documentation
5. As I have a electronic back ground, provide technical support to this companies overseas customers
6. Assisting the overseas sales department in making new leads and potential sales.
7. This is my favourite do what you manager asks that is reasonable
I can imagine that my day will be filled up.
I expect that this will be a pressured job as they questioned me why I needed preparation time for the business classes.
I think they will make sure every minute of my day is used. |
