|
|
I came here (Seoul) in late 1996. There was an internet cafe (first in Korea?) located in an alleyway near Kyobo bookstore in the Chongno
area.
Many teachers hung out there, and I opened my first e-mail account there and learned about surfing the internet.
The owner was a guy named Chris, as I recall. |

It was still there last time I looked, but under new management and not nearly as cool as before.
I miss the New Year's and Halloween parties they put on every year. I don't miss getting shot down by Chris' sister on a regular basis, though.
I lived way out in the boondocks of Gyeonggi in '96, so that place was my only link to civilization...moved to Seoul in '97 and the The Gang at the net cafe then was the coolest bunch EVAR~~! Summer of '97, Summer of Love, baby. |

Wasn't it called Cyberia, or was that another internet cafe? |

Cyberia was in Itaewon near the back alley.
The Kyobo place was simply "Net Cafe" |

Because we're cool, and we're always first.

And this is why, for years, whenever some ESLers I knew were yapping on about "Dave's ESL Cafe" I thought they were talking about some goddamn PC bang in downtown Seoul. |

Yeah, it was a pretty cool place, and, yes, his sister was hot. Last time I saw her ('98-'99?) she was moving to someplace on the west coast of the USA.
The ESL community here seemed much smaller and tighter back then. |

I remember one of the first Internet cafes in Shinchon in 1997. The price was 1,000 won per 10 minutes, but the connection was so much faster than dial-up. It's no longer there but I remember hitting that place frequently. |

She was opening her own hair stylist place in San Fran, I believe. I miss her slammin'-ness.
Chris is still around, though, in between trips to wherever. |

I spent many happy hours in La Puta in Kangnam.
I went there for a month before I found out that La Puta was a Japanese animation. |

I don't remember you, but then again, this board has gotten better, with many of the burger flippers no longer here. Perhaps one has come back, maybe you? |
